Clinical Teaching Workshop Series

Pictured left to right, Clinical Teaching Workshop Series 2024 graduates, Drs. Shagun Arora, Carolyn Hendrickson, Joseph Yang, Evie KalmarRose Monahan, Marlene Martin, Christopher Carlos, Daniel Escobar, and Brad Sharpe. (Not pictured Drs. Brad Monash, Emma Bainbridge, Katie Brooks, Alex Logan, and Sarah Obeid.)

We are thrilled to report the success of the first annual DOM PRO-cess facilitated Clinical Teaching Workshop Series taught by Dr. Brad Sharpe and Dr. Brad Monash from the UCSF Health Division of Hospital Medicine. Drs. Sharpe and Monash have been teaching this series for almost two decades after training in the model developed by Dr. Kelly Skeff from the Stanford Faculty Development Center.

Due to the success of the first Clinical Teaching Workshop Series this past Spring, the DOM PRO-cess team is working with Drs. Sharp and Monash to make this highly respected series available to clinician-educators across the DOM. The course comprises seven 2-hour workshops focused on key domains in medical education. They are highly engaging, interactive, and intended to increase participant versatility as a teacher and provide a structured framework to analyze teaching. Applications are now open for the Spring 2025 cohort.

Who is eligible to apply? The DOM aims to attract clinician-teachers/educators from all clinical sites and a mix of generalists and specialists who are dedicated to building their clinical teaching skills. Faculty at all levels in all series can apply but must spend at least 40% of their time doing clinical work, including direct practice, clinical teaching, and administration. In addition, we are asking faculty to commit to attend at least six of the seven sessions and to solicit a letter of support from their division chief. The application deadline is September 30th, 2024. Please use the link below to submit your application.

We are thrilled to celebrate the DOM faculty who were recently inducted to the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. These accomplished educators were honored at the Annual Celebration of New Members on September 11, 2024. Selection to the Academy recognizes the contributions of health professions faculty and "front-line" teachers, educators, and mentors who impact our learners and faculty peers on a regular basis to make UCSF such an outstanding healthcare institution. Congratulations to this accomplished group!

If you are interested in more information about the benefits of AME membership and the process of applying to the AME, please review the recording of DOM PRO-cess workshop Applying to the Academy of Medical Educators (AME) or use the link button below.

DOM PRO-CESS Events and Workshops

Networking Lunches and Dinners

DOM PRO-cess is hosting peer networking and mentoring lunches and dinners to support our core pillar of Building Community. When PRO-cess was established, we understood that creating a community of medical educators was key to our program’s success and, more importantly, for each individual faculty educator’s success. Our community-focused programming is always evolving as we attempt to meet your needs within the competing demands on faculty educator time at work and at home. To date, we have hosted six lunches and dinners focused on cross-site community development and near-peer mentoring. Our next two gatherings will be on October 24 (dinner) and November 18 (lunch). More fall dates will be announced soon. We would love to have you join one of these events! If interested, please indicate your interest by completing a survey using the link below.

Educator Book Group

November 14, 2024,6:00pm

Location, in person in Mission/Noe Valley

Please stay tuned for more details!

With inspiration from Dr. Jamie Yao from the DHM@ZSFG, DOM PRO-cess hosted our first in-person book group. We read There There by Tommy Orange this summer. For a great read about the impact of the book, check out this fantastic article about Tommy Orange’s discussion of the book with a group of high school students in the Bronx. We were thrilled with the turn out for a great discussion and socializing.

Our next book is Fast Girls: A novel of the 1936 Women’s Olympic Team by Elise Hooper. We will meet on Thursday, November 14. Email bridget.obrien@ucsf.edu to be included on the event invitation.

Coaching DOM Residents and Fellows

The Department of Medicine GME programs, including the residencies and fellowships, is launching a program to support trainee development as excellent physicians. At any time in their training, a subset of residents and fellows may need individualized coaching to improve their competency-based performance. The DOM Coaching Program is looking for faculty who are passionate about learner development and who would be interested in bolstering their skills to coach trainees for skill acquisition and success. The focus of coaching will be formative rather than evaluative. Areas where faculty might coach trainees include clinical skills development (efficiency, reasoning, documentation), medical knowledge, team leadership, and communication skills. Faculty coaches will be supported through a longitudinal faculty development curriculum. Please reach out to vanessa.thompson@ucsf.edu for more information about this volunteer role.

DR Block Small Group Leader

DOM faculty Drs. Sirisha Narayana and Katie Brooks are course directors for the Diagnostic Reasoning (DR) Block—the final course in the pre-clerkship curriculum (Foundations 1) for UCSF School of Medicine students. They are recruiting small group leaders for this course which takes place in December 2024. Faculty guidance during DR small groups help students develop their clinical reasoning skills, while also reinforcing essential medical knowledge. All DR small groups take place in person on the Parnassus campus. The dates and times for each of the small groups, along with the main reasoning and clinical concepts covered, can be found in this Qualtrics Survey which can also be used to sign up.

Funding Opportunities

Academy of Medical Educators Innovations Funding

As many of you know, there are several stages of the funding process with final proposals due on December 11, 2024. Please feel free to reach out to any of the DOM PRO-cess team members for consultation on your evolving proposal by emailing DOM.PRO-cess@ucsf.edu.
