As we ease into deep summer, we are doing our best to grab bits of the season we love: fresh greens from the garden, unhurried swims under the open sky, bike rides across rolling hills, long evenings on the deck with family and friends. Trying to squeeze as much as we can from this stellar weather and a bit more summertime ease. Here we are, paddling on the lake in Central Park on our 40th wedding anniversary. Amazingly, we were put in boat #40 and the one right next to us was #86, the year we married! This milestone also marks our 40th year in practice, as we tied the knot the day after we graduated from naturopathic medical school. How blessed we are to have found our beloved profession AND each other, along with the chance to work with many of you.

If you feel like you need a tune-up or are working to improve your health.... if you’re trying to tamp down allergies or have your immune system a bit more robust by the time next winter rolls around.... or are working to build your bones, naturopathic approaches work. If your spirits are flagging or your energy is in the dumps, c'mon in, let's see what we can do. If you'd like the chance to sit with one of us, review your health concerns, and be proactive with your medical care, we'd love to work with you. We also love working with kiddos-- those with physical health issues as well as more psycho-emotional, behavioral, or learning challenges.

Call 860.763.1225, and we’ll find a time. We work in-person in Northampton, Massachusetts, and by telemedicine. We are scheduling new patient appointments for late August into the fall.

Overwhelmed and Dysregulated?

Reset your nervous system with homeopathy’s help.

by Amy Rothenberg ND, DHANP

"Randy cannot seem to settle down. And he’s so easily distracted,” his father told me. “If things don’t go Randy’s way, he is difficult for hours—pouty, contradictory, hard to please, and just plain unpleasant. When the pollen count is high and he gets congested, his mood turns especially sour, and he wreaks havoc on the family. The school social worker described Randy as ‘dysregulated,’ but I’m not entirely sure what that means.”

Dysregulation means that a person’s autonomic (involuntary) nervous system is so overwhelmed by stressors that it is unable to self-regulate and return to a calm, balanced baseline. Instead, it treats everyday stressors as major threats and gets stuck in one of two survival modes:

• fight-or-flight state—being on chronic high alert, with strong reactions such as panic, anxiety, fear, or anger

• freeze state—being chronically nonreactive, shut down, burned out, depressed, or emotionally numb

Randy's mother Robin also struggled. She had a temper, was easily angered, and seemed unable to handle the day-to-day stress that goes into raising a family.

RECIPE: Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp

I warm myself a serving for breakfast and know I am enjoying some good protein, fiber, and vitamins. The sour and sweet combo is divine—so tart but also lures you into the fibrousness and silky texture.

There is a blessing from Judaism called the Shehecheyanu, often said when doing something new or reaching a particular moment in life. It calls up gratitude for being alive, and being grateful for reaching a particular moment. I found Shehecheyanu on my lips as I enjoyed my warm bowl of crisp!

I built this recipe with ingredients I wanted to include for a gluten-free, low-refined sugar, high fiber, high protein crisp. When I make a crisp, I double up the usual amount of topping because I prefer that ratio, and use a blend of butter and coconut oil. It takes about a half hour to slice and chop and pull it all together before baking, and it will be eaten just as fast!
