Measles Update

American/Nebraska Heart Association (AHA/NHA)

During Heart Health Month, the AHA/NHA wants Nebraskans to know that there are important things each of us can do to improve our own heart health and save lives.

One of those things includes learning CPR to help save a life by stepping in as a first responder until professional help arrives.

Since the American Heart Association was founded in 1924, deaths from cardiovascular diseases have been cut in half. But heart disease remains the leading cause of death.

Read about the things you can do to improve heart health and learn how you can support AHA/NHA efforts through participation in one of their upcoming local events in their February partner highlight.

We're Off to a Rough Start

This is the worst January in more than 30 years for measles. This is not normal.

Hundreds of cases have already been reported across the U.S., during a month that usually sees slower spread thanks to school breaks and colder weather. Instead, a fast-moving outbreak in South Carolina is driving much of the surge, largely among unvaccinated children, with ripple effects now reaching other states.

Measles spreads like wildfire in communities with low vaccination rates, which is what we are seeing here.

If you’re fully vaccinated, meaning you have had 2 doses of the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) you are well protected, even in higher-risk areas. If there’s an active outbreak and you are traveling with a baby under 12 months, talk with your pediatrician about early vaccination. Read more updates in her newsletter.

(Note: Measles was just detected in Lincoln's wastewater.)

Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving and protecting the health, wellness, and fitness of Lincoln's children, families, and seniors.

We work to improve wellness policies and conduct community level health research. We collaborate with community partners to promote healthy weights through good nutrition and fitness, improve child and maternal health by supporting breastfeeding, create better patient outcomes by increasing cancer screening and vaccination rates, improving chronic disease management, increasing preventative outreach, and standardizing clinical practices. During public health crises like the COVID 19 pandemic, we help to protect community health by providing science and evidence-based information.

Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln also works to improve health equity in our community, addressing disparities among populations with the highest burden of chronic disease.
