A Tea Party Provides Joy to Volunteers and Those they Serve

Interview and article by: Aleyna Akyuz
Gail Schlett has always had a passion for volunteer work, “I think the joy that I get back from engaging in these activities provides so much – I can’t even describe the emotion, other than pure joy and happiness to me. I feel that by giving back to the senior citizens (and other organizations), I get so much more out of it than I give to them. That’s what drives me, it really does.”

Members of the Trowel Garden Club teach garden therapy once a month to Lake Ridge residents.

The Trowel Garden Club has been an Eastern Prince William County institution for 70 years and is the oldest gardening club in the area. Here at Fellowship Square, the Trowel Garden Club has greatly impacted our community by providing garden therapy to Lake Ridge Fellowship House residents. As a retired psychologist, Jo Ann Wiggins, club president, recognized the importance of garden therapy and wanted to bring sunshine and flowers to senior citizens who might not have access to them.

How You Spend Your Time Matters
For more than 60 years, Fellowship Square has been providing affordable apartment homes and supportive services to older adults who have limited resources and struggle to make ends meet. Today, we’re all experiencing the pinch of higher inflation and paying more for goods and services that we use every day.

A recent study revealed that because of the current economic climate, seniors have few dollars for personal spending and are even cutting back on heating and cooling their house so that they can afford groceries and other basic necessities.
Fortunately, Fellowship Square has programs and resources that help us meet the needs of the 850 residents who call our properties home. No one goes without a place to live, food on their table, or funds to cover unexpected or emergency costs.

For example, through our Fellowship Fresh program, we deliver perishable and non-perishable food to residents – weekly and/or monthly. We rely on a team of volunteers to help pack, sort and deliver groceries to seniors’ doors.
April is National Volunteer Month. We want to recognize and thank those most valuable to our mission – the hundreds of volunteers that give of their time so that Fellowship House residents have food on their table and activities to keep them feeling healthy and engaged.

If you’ve been thinking about volunteering, I urge you to make April the month you finally do. We always need dedicated people who can give an hour – or more – in support of our mission. We have many volunteer opportunities for individuals, small groups and large groups so please consider helping out if you have time to give.

I encourage you to get involved and make an impact on Fellowship House residents and the work that we do. If you are a current or past volunteer, I want you to know that your contribution does not go unnoticed, and we greatly appreciate all that you have done and continue to do for us.

RESIDENT LIFE
Spring is a Great Time for Cleaning, Organizing and a Fresh Start
Lake Ridge Fellowship House

Lake Ridge’s Annual Spring-Cleaning Donation Drive was a success! Residents cleaned up their apartments and gave back by donating items they no longer need. Donations included clothing, shoes, accessories, purses, luggage, housewares, linens and comforters, fabric, a sewing machine, a TV, printers, a camera, a fan, a shredder and various other items. All items were donated to the Salvation Army.

Largo Landing Fellowship House

In the month of April, our Service Coordinator, Grace Foster, taught the Largo Landing community about the significance of keeping personal documents in order. The residents were happy to learn about the appropriate times to discard documents by shredding. Also, each participant was given a handy file organizer to kickstart their journey towards improved document organization!
