Matchmaker?

This past Sunday, Jennifer and I attended the wedding of a neighbor and friend. This Sunday, we will be in Austin, TX, officiating a family wedding. Over the next months, we will celebrate a few weddings at Christ the King. But, I wish we celebrated more. We have a lot of baptism; five this past Sunday. Funerals- sadly, they are part of every church. I’d love to celebrate more weddings at CtK.

It’s hard to find the right ‘one.’ Personally, an older, trusted friend helped me. One Sunday after church, Susan pulled me aside and said, “I saw you sitting next to Jennifer Rankin.” “Yes,” I replied. “You two should get married. You’d make a great couple.”

The next day, I called Jennifer. “Susan saw us sitting next to one another. She thinks we should get married. (Pause) Do you want to go out with me?” True story.

Don’t be afraid to make an introduction or offer occasional unsolicited advice. The matchmaker, or yenta, played an important role in traditional Jewish culture (See Fiddler on the Roof). And Rabbinic literature describes God as the supreme Matchmaker. “Adam, meet Eve.” “Eve, meet Adam.” (Wilson, Our Father Abraham)

I don’t know where I would be if Susan had not said what she said. I’m so grateful I had a ‘matchmaker.’ I bet some of us could play that role as well.

Warmly,

David

Witnesses to the World

Friends,

Here's a roundup of this week's outreach prayers and events.

The Anglican Relief and Development Fund (ARDF) is the charitable organization of the Anglican Church of North American (ACNA), and as members of the ACNA, its one of the primary means we coordinate disaster relief efforts like support for the recent hurricanes in the Southeast, and offer support to our brothers and sisters globally. There are two ARDF events this week listed below:

ARDF 20th Anniversary Celebration October 24 6-8 p.m. at TFCA Church. This is an opportunity to meet the new archbishop as we celebrate the last 20 years of work while looking towards the next 20 years.

ARDF Benefit Concert for Uganda October 25 7-9 p.m. at The Duke's Home.

Please join me in praying for MaRiH Center:

We celebrate 50 years of their ministry caring for the vulnerable in our community and pray for the success of their anniversary celebration this Sunday. We pray that the Lord would touch the hearts of those with means to meet their critical material needs, mostly diapers and baby wipes. We also pray for volunteers and continued financial provision for their ministry.
