The incoming FAEA Board of Directors had their first training at the Marriott in Lake Mary on January 25. The Creative Leadership model, which is an emergent/subject experience, was infused into our work forming a collaborative team. ‘Emergent’ and ‘subjective’ are terms from the field of aesthetics, meaning that the experience is very personal and becomes prominent in the subconscious before it manifests in our consciousness. As we become more aware of our values, beliefs, and actions, we are able to stay focused and fully immersed. This immersion is a mental state that establishes feelings of great joy and accomplishment, hence Csikszentmihalyi’s (1975)
Flow
theory.
Flow
is also known as being in the zone. Each board member was in the zone during this weekend identifying their personal values, collaborating creatively on the making of art through character traits, and diving into FAEA’s Strategic Plan to meet the needs of our membership.
The summer professional learning opportunities are developing nicely and should be out to the members soon for registration. There will be two Master Series in collaboration with the Art Education Department at the University of Florida at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art. An additional Master Series workshop will be in collaboration with the Art Education Department at the Florida State University. The inaugural President’s Leadership Workshop will be held in July at the Ringling College of Art and Design (RCAD). Dr. Larry Thompson, president of RCAD, will be our keynote speaker, and we will have an opportunity to work with world renowned spoken word poet, Cedric Hameed, at the new Sarasota Art Museum. A plethora of ArtLabs will spring up throughout the state to provide members with one-day intensive workshops. It will truly be a rigorous summer filled with visual arts experiences. I encourage all members to find a workshop that will stretch them professionally and artistically as we follow our mission,
“to promote art education in Florida through professional development, service, advancement of knowledge, and leadership”.
