Planting Progress Report
The past two weeks have allowed you and your neighbors to be productive! Currently, Maryland has 58% of it's corn planted while 15% of it has emerged. 92% of Maryland barley is in head while 97% of Maryland wheat is in head. Read full report here. Now time for some rain!

Overall, the U.S. has 80% of it's corn crop planted with 43% emerged. Read more here.

Market and Trade Update
The U.S. Grains Council shared trade updates:
  • Corn: China and Mexico were the largest net buyers, with 686,000 MT and 433,500 MT. Panama, South Korea, and unknown desiations purchased 110,600 MT.
  • Sorghum: 254,100 MT was purchased by China and 9,700 MT by Japan.
  • Barley: Taiwan bought 200 MT. NEW - U.S. Barley can now be exported to China following the approval of phytosanitary protocol by both countries, read more here.
  • Wheat: US Wheat Assocaites said Chinese buyers purchased 340,000 MT of US hard red winter wheat. The largest purchase volume since March 2018.
  • On May 19th, the UK Government proposed to drop corn import tariffs to zero but to maintain current wheat tariffs starting January 2021. The same zero duty applies to rye, soybeans, soymeal and rapeseed as well.
  • USMCA is expected to enter into force on July 1, 2020.

Early May, grab bucket unloaders worker to unload the third bulk vessel of U.S. distiller's dried grains with solubles. Watch for yourself to the right.

Wheat Condition Report
University of Maryland's, Nidhi Rawat, reports that most wheat has finished flowering, while wheat in the North-west is currently flowering. Currently, the FHB risk for Maryland is not high. Read more here.

Biotech Regulation Process
USDA and its Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency published revised rules intended to modernize its regualtory system on genetically engineered organisms and other breeding technologies through a science-based system. Learn more from U.S. Wheat here.

Economic Relief
Farmers to Families Food Box Program
Announced $1.2 billion in contracts May 8th for food box deliveries of fresh produce, dairy, and precooked meat. Read more here.

Coronavirus Food Assistance Program
The program will provide $16 billion in direct support based on actual losses from agriucltural producers where prices and market supply chains have been impacted and will assist producers with additional adjustment and marketing costs resulting from lost demand and short-term oversupply for the 2020 marketing year caused by COVID-19. MARBIDCO
Marbidco will receive $2.2 milion to help Maryland's food and fiber producers, harvesters, and primary processors. Grants will be awarded to those making necessary changes due to COVID-19. These grants range from $1,000 to $50,000. Learn more here.

  3. Complete 2020 ARC/PLC Enrollment - deadline to enroll is June 30, 2020

Spotted Lanternfly - Hatching

MDA has confirmed that the first spotted lanternfly has hatched in Cecil Chounty. Hatching will continue through mid-July. Businesses in quarantine counties, Harford and Cecil, that travel must get a permit. Learn more here.
EPA - Glyphosate

The EPA continues to find that there are no risks of concern to human health when glyphosate is used in accordance with its current label. EPA also found that glyphosate is unlikely to be a human carcinogen. Read more here.
#HungerHeros - Maryland Farm Bureau and Food Bank

With COVID-19, the Maryland Farm Bureau and Maryland Food Bank partner to meet the demand of hungry families and individuals across the state. The goal is to raise awareness of the Maryland Food Bank and strengthen the connection bewteen food and agriculture. Help Farm Bureau raise $10,000 here.
Farm Safety - Educate Young Children Through Games

The Propane Education and Research Council created an interactive online activity center for children looking for fund learning opportunities. This site reinforces the importance of propane safety and education with a focus on the farm.
DPI - Virtual Scholarship Golf Tournament

The Delmarva Poultry Industry will be having their annual Scholarship Golf Tournament virtually! Register by June 3rd as a sponsor or golfer here . Prizes will be awarded for the best video, best photo, most creative video, and most creative photo.
CLEAR30 - New Pilot Program

USDA FSA will open signup this summer for CLEAR30, a new pilot program that offers farmers and landowners an opportunity to enroll in a 30-year Conservation Reserve Program contract. You can sign-up from July 6th to August 21st. Learn more here.
Corn Use Demand

The NCGA is working to establish new uses of corn by working with university researchers, government entities, and untraditional partners to prime the pump for innovation and viable uses of corn. Read more here.

K-State - Virtual Wheat Field Day

UMD Assistant Professor - International Award for His Contributions to Wheat Genomics

Vijay Tiwari, assistant professor at the University of Maryland, recently received the LEadership Award from the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium. UMD Small Grains Breeding and Genetics program is on the verge of rolling out new varieties of wheat to serve the state of Maryland and Mid-Atlantic region while helping combat global hunger. National Sorghum Foundation Scholarship
  • There are currently three scholarships open for college students studying agriculture. Each scholarhsip includes $1,500 towards tuition.
