Every day at LUM, we witness stories of resilience, compassion, and hope. Sometimes those moments come from staff and volunteers. Other times, they come from the very people we serve.
Recently, a woman came to LUM after losing her home in a fire. She arrived seeking guidance and support as she began the difficult process of rebuilding her life.
As she spoke with a staff member, another guest quietly listened from the lobby. He was waiting to be added to the emergency shelter waitlist and was facing hardships of his own. Even so, he reached into his wallet and gave her the only cash he had, $30. Then he shared his package of cookies.
It was a simple act of kindness, but one that made a lasting impact. His gift could not replace what the woman had lost, but it reminded her that she was not alone. In a moment of uncertainty, a stranger chose compassion over keeping what little he had.
Stories like this remind us that generosity is not measured by abundance. Even in difficult seasons, kindness has the power to bring hope, strengthen relationships, and build a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and cared for.
