Reminder of Information Meeting This Sunday
The recent decision by your Board of Administration that Pleasant Hill will remain affiliated with the United Methodist Church (UMC) is significant. This decision will continue to affect our church and its members. Understanding that there may be questions and concerns regarding these decisions, we want to address them openly and compassionately.
Therefore, a listening and question/answer session is scheduled for Sunday, August 11, at 4:30 PM in the Family Life Center.
Summary
Previously, we shared that the South Carolina Conference Trustees, in its Local Church Discernment Process, mandates that a request to enter the process lies with the local church Board of Administration. To this end, your Board of Administration undertook several steps:
-
Held Two Q&A Listening Sessions: We engaged with you directly to hear your thoughts and concerns and address your questions.
-
Solicited Your Input via a Survey: We valued and collected your feedback through an anonymous survey.
-
Collected, Tabulated, and Shared Survey Results: We transparently shared the survey outcomes with the congregation.
Using these survey results, along with our current membership and financial situation, the Board carefully and diligently evaluated our ability to meet the Conference requirements for separation, which include:
- Achieving two-thirds approval to separate from our professing members.
- Meeting specific legal and financial requirements.
- Projecting our ability to accomplish all tasks by the end of May.
Additionally, we reviewed your responses regarding your desire to permit or prohibit same-sex marriage ceremonies on our campus as delegated by the General Conference to the local church Board of Trustees.
As reported, after careful and frank consideration, the Administrative Board has made the following decision:
- Voted (7-2) to remain affiliated with the United Methodist Church. This decision means Pleasant Hill will not enter the discernment process required for separation.
- Voted unanimously (9-0) to affirm the Trustee’s decision prohibiting same-sex marriage ceremonies on our church campus.
- Voted unanimously (9-0) to express our desire for SPRC to maintain a traditional approach in acquiring future pastoral appointments.
We understand that this decision may not align with the views of all members, and we are deeply empathetic to those who feel differently. We aim to foster a church environment where everyone feels heard and valued. We encourage you to attend the upcoming session to voice your thoughts and seek clarity.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we navigate these challenging times together.

Worship This Sunday
This Sunday at Pleasant Hill Methodist we explore the theme “Courage to Speak Truth,” drawing from Ephesians 4:25-5:2.
In a world often filled with half-truths and silence, we are called to stand firm in the truth of God’s word. The Apostle Paul reminds us to put away falsehood and speak truthfully to our neighbors, for we are all members of one body.
This passage challenges us to live out our faith with integrity, embracing a new way of life marked by honesty, kindness, and love. As we gather, we will reflect on what it means to embody Christ’s teachings in our daily interactions, showing courage in both word and deed.
Come prepared to be inspired and encouraged to speak truth in love, building up the body of Christ and fostering genuine community.

Special Aldersgate Ministry Offering This Sunday
This Sunday, August 11, we have a unique opportunity to make a significant impact through a special offering for the Aldersgate Special Needs Ministry. As part of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, Aldersgate is an example of what we can achieve together, far beyond what we could do alone.
Established in 2003, the Aldersgate Special Needs Ministry provides homes for adults with developmental disabilities. These residents are encouraged to be self-sufficient while receiving care from our trained staff in a nurturing Christian atmosphere. Currently, Aldersgate operates five group homes throughout South Carolina, offering many individuals a loving and supportive environment.
Aldersgate relies solely on contributions from churches, groups, and individuals. Your generous donations are vital in enabling Aldersgate to provide exceptional care for its residents, maintain its existing homes, and plan for new ones.
The South Carolina Conference has designated August 11 as Aldersgate Special Needs Ministry Sunday. We kindly ask you to consider making an extra offering this Sunday. Donations can be made online as direct giving to Aldersgate, or you can indicate your contribution on checks or envelopes in Sunday's offering.
Thank you for your faithful generosity and commitment to this vital ministry.

This past week, I had the privilege of observing our Board of Administration diligently and thoughtfully evaluate your responses to the recent survey. The decision to remain affiliated with the United Methodist Church (UMC) was not made lightly or casually. It was made with full awareness of its impact on our congregation. This decision is significant and affects each of us differently, making it essential that we move forward with empathy, grace, and unity.
I am aware that this decision has stirred a variety of emotions within our congregation. Some may feel relief and affirmation, while others may experience disappointment and uncertainty. In these moments of differing perspectives, we are called to remember our shared faith and commitment to God’s work and all that binds us together:
-
One Body: The church, the collective body of believers.
-
One Spirit: The Holy Spirit, who indwells and empowers all believers.
-
One Hope: The hope of eternal life and the promises of God.
-
One Lord: Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
-
One Faith: The faith that saves, centered on Jesus Christ.
-
One Baptism: The act of baptism that signifies the believer’s identification with Christ.
-
One God and Father of All: The acknowledgment of one God, the Father, who is over all, through all, and in all.
None of these have changed. Regardless of our individual views on the decision that has been made, one truth remains steadfast: God has called Pleasant Hill to be Christ’s hands and feet in this place on the map, at this point in history, with the Good News of the Gospel. Our mission to “Reach others with the love of God and the Good News of Jesus Christ, to grow through worship and study, and to serve God and our neighbors in everything we do” also remains unchanged. The needs of our community and the world are as pressing as ever, and our role in addressing those needs is as vital as it has always been.
Now, more than ever, we are called to extend grace to one another and to ourselves. The grace that Christ has abundantly given to us should be our guiding light as we navigate this time together. It is a grace that embraces differences, fosters understanding, and strengthens our unity. I pray it may be so.
I am humbled and honored to be your sheepdog to the Lord Shepherd.
Grateful,
Pete+
