Our next issue of One Body, One Spirit will be published on September 25, 2026.

Letter to my Flock

Dear friends,

We are getting ready for our big celebration of Rally Day this Sunday, Sept. 13! This year, Rally Day will include a potluck brunch. Thank you, ahead, to Year of Christian Fellowship (Dulcie McLeod and Marci Deakins), all who will bring food to share, and those who have offered to help with set up, serving, or clean up. The potluck will follow worship with the commissioning of the teachers and other helpers and the Blessing of the Backpacks! Children are urged to bring their backpacks to church.

Our Book Group will be meeting at the manse (3 Oakfield Rd., Saint James) to discuss One Summer in Savannah at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16. The author, Terah Shelton Harris, will be joining us on Zoom!

We will have the joy of baptizing Valentina Bella McMaster-Castro, daughter of Jahn and Savannah Castro, and great granddaughter of Roy McMaster, in worship on Sept. 20.

We had the joy of baptizing Karina James Sabella, daughter of Nikki (Goodman) and Mark Sabella, on August 30.

And as it is September 11, the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, my heart is heavy. I am grateful to all the first responders who worked to save lives that day. I am grateful for all the volunteers who showed up at Ground Zero to help—some of whom became ill from their exposure to the toxic environment. I will continue to hold in my prayers the families who lost loved ones that day and those who were injured or left with chronic disease or scars (physical and emotional) after helping to save others.

An exhibit at the 911 Memorial Museum in NYC features a paper-mache phoenix with a 15-foot wingspan. The artwork was created in 2006 by children with family members who were victims of the 9/11 attacks. The phoenix in mythology is a symbol of rebirth from the ashes. The sculpture symbolized “a path out of grief, while each child’s artwork honored a loved one.”

I am grateful for the Lord’s healing of our country after that terrible time and I pray the Lord will heal, unite, and strengthen us as a nation and grant us peace. Will you join with me with this beautiful prayer from Brother Darrell Burns, S.J.:

Holy God,

Creator of all people and all nations,

It is with sorrow and apprehension we remember the tragic events

That occurred on this day.

We lift to You in prayer all those who died

In the Twin Towers, at the Pentagon, and on United Airlines Flight 93

In Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

We entrust them to Your loving care.

Console their families, friends, and all who mourn this loss

In the hope that all who trust in You find peace and rest in Your Kingdom.

We pray for those who courageously responded to provide aid and comfort to the afflicted.

May their painful memories of that day

Be healed and transformed into strength and positive resolution.

We also pray for ourselves as we seek Your strength and guidance.

We live in the aftermath of this tragedy and under the shadow of future acts of aggression;

We stand in need of Your assistance.

Enable us, Dear God, to put an end to fear:

By resolving to live lives that are based on respect for one another;

By resolving to abide in a peaceful manner

and never settle disagreements in our lives in a violent way;

By resolving not to fall into the trap of blaming entire ethnic groups, races, or religions

in response to acts of hostility;

By resolving that justice, not revenge, prevail in our world.

Let us resolve that in the face of hatred, we will show love;

That in times of despair, we will be voices of hope

And creators of new dreams;

That in times of darkness, we will be sources of light.

Let us resolve that we never regard forgiveness as weakness,

But rather as a source of strength in our lives and in our world.

And, let us honor the memory of nearly 3,000 individuals who died on September 11, 2001

By resolving, with Your help Almighty God,

To truly live this way so You may be glorified and Your love made known to others through us.

Amen.

God bless us with peace,

Pastor Karen

Highlights from the August 25 Session Meeting

We opened the meeting with the original “Serenity Prayer” from Reinhold Niebuhr in 1926. Lori Yastrub shared a devotion based on Philippians 1:12-25.

Lynne Leftenant, Vice President of the Trustees, visited to share about the carpet for the Narthex that a couple from the Yoga class would like to donate, lights that will be installed on the River Road side of our property, the AED needing new batteries, the cesspool work on Aug. 27, the gutter work that will soon be scheduled, and that the Trustees are discussing the updating of the bathrooms next to the parish hall. Session approved the gift of the Narthex carpet and asked Lori Yastrub to be on the committee to choose it.

We shared joys and concerns and prayed for healing. We approved the wedding of Madeleine Buckley and Daniel Garamvolgyi at 3 p.m. on Sept. 18, 2027, and reviewed the Member Roll, making a list of those who haven’t attended in a while and will be contacted by Pastor Karen.

Terri Miller, Liaison to the Deacons, shared that the group would like to do a mission project, making “soup in a jar” mix, selling to the congregation, and giving to families at the homeless shelter (CHI).

Session approved Tony Scarlatos’ request to allow OOMPA to hold a coat drive in the parish hall on October 24 and a toy drive on November 14.

Lori Kenney volunteered to assist Lori Yastrub with Faith Formation Committee.

Treasurer Jocelyn Pajares shared how the cost of building repairs and snow removal has gone up since last year and that giving was down 2% this summer, as compared to last.

Pastor Karen shared highlights from her ministry this summer, such as Deacon, Trustee, and Session picnics at the manse; GA in Milwaukee; House Blessings; the Sunday School Pool Party; and more. Session will meet next on September 29 at 7 p.m.
