Throughout the world, the month of October has been set aside as a time to honor those who labor as pastors and overseers of the Church, both around the world and in our local communities. During this month, countless congregations pause and look beyond themselves to honor those who diligently lead, teach and serve. But more importantly, Jesus told us just how critically important it is to love one another. This is a foundational expression of our faith in Christ because it reflects His covenant love and His heart for His children—and even for those who are at enmity with Him. Paul picks up on this theme in his letter to the Romans when he writes: “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” ROMANS 12:10 |
Within this rich Biblical and historical tradition, year after year our River of Life family has “outdone one another” in expressing heartfelt appreciation toward our Pastors and, more recently, our RLA Staff members as well. As Vice-Chairman of the Board, I can tell you with certainty that our Pastors and Staff are the last people in this church to seek attention for themselves. They serve our Lord Jesus Christ faithfully and tend to shy away from undue recognition. Maybe it’s that Midwestern background! Or maybe it’s simply because they understand that love isn’t about drawing attention to ourselves—it’s about caring for others. So this month, I want to encourage our River of Life family to show Pastors Todd & Sheri, Laura, Victoria and Tori a little extra love and appreciation. Go out of your way to let them know what their ministry means to you. Pick up a card. Write a personal note. Speak a word of encouragement. And, if you are able, consider including a love offering and placing it in the basket in the foyer. All monies collected will be distributed to the RLA team. Let’s not simply appreciate them in our thoughts. Let’s “outdo one another in showing honor” through our words and our actions. Thank you! Duke Smith Vice-Chairman, RLA Board |
