Greetings,
DID YOU KNOW that according to a Cochrane Reviews, daily aspirin does not reliably prevent bowel cancer in people at average risk?
Any potential protective effect may take more than a decade to appear, if it appears at all, and the evidence for that benefit is weak. In contrast, the risk of serious bleeding begins right away, even with low-dose aspirin. Experts warn that prevention decisions should be individualized, not automatic.

Steve: Last month, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology released their first major cholesterol guidelines update since 2018. The headlines focused on lower targets, new tests, and earlier treatment. All of that matters. But buried in the same week's news was a statistic that should stop us cold: only 1 in 10 Americans has optimal heart health. If allopathic medicine keeps tightening the screws on cholesterol, why is heart disease still winning?
The Good
- A major focus of the guideline is earlier intervention through healthy lifestyle changes, starting in childhood.
- Everyone should get a lipoprotein(a) test. This is perhaps the most clinically significant new recommendation. We've been clamoring for this for years. Lp(a) is the strongest inherited risk factor for heart disease. About 20% of people have elevated levels, which increases cardiovascular risk by about 40%. At very high levels, risk doubles.
- Most Americans should be tested for apolipoprotein B. ApoB directly quantifies the number of atherogenic lipoproteins, providing a more accurate measure of atherogenic particle burden than LDL-C.
The Bad
- The guidelines do not recommend that everyone should get a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein test. Considering cardiac inflammation can make up 50% of cardiac risk, not including hsCRP for all is a costly omission.
- Specific LDL-cholesterol treatment goals are back. For individuals with established cardiovascular disease at very high risk, the target is under 55 mg/dL. For those with cardiovascular disease not at very high risk, the goal is under 70 mg/dL. This is asinine.
The Ugly
- In patients with dyslipidemia, the use of dietary supplements is not recommended to lower LDL-cholesterol or triglycerides based on limited and inconsistent data and/or limited benefits.
Why Is Only 1 in 10 Americans Truly Heart Healthy?
LDL cholesterol was never the whole story. It's one variable in a much more complex equation, and for decades the medical orthodoxy treated it like it was the only one that mattered. Some of the 2026 guidelines are, in many ways, an acknowledgment of this with the Lp(a) and ApoB recommendations. However, they did not go far enough by omitting HsCRP and regressed by not recommending dietary supplements and going back to draconian cholesterol levels.

A middle-age woman came to Steve for rapid weight loss, sudden change in bowel habits that caused bouts of extreme constipation and uncontrolled diarrhea, as well as chronic stomach pain. She was also experiencing extreme family-related stress. These issues were also affecting her bones adversely as she got a very unusual foot fracture. She was not getting answers from her army of specialists who simply wanted her to go on multiple GI medications. She wanted to see if she could actually fix the issues.
Steve explained that what she was eating was diametrically opposed to what her body needed, causing malabsorption and malnutrition. Moreover, her doctor prescribed a huge amount of iron which she was not absorbing and contributing to her constipation. Steve also made the connection between her stress and the inability for her GI tract to function properly.
Steve recommended an optimal eating plan for her to follow while also allowing her gastrointestinal tract to rest and repair through targeted supplementation and other lifestyle measures. They discussed sensible types of physical activity and stress management techniques that she felt comfortable with.
In a few short months, her gastrointestinal function normalized. She even took the plan a step further by eschewing caffeine! Currently, she feels great without any life limitations.

A colleague of mine and I adjust one another every week and recently he told me about some tooth pain that he had been having. It all began a year prior when he was playing football with friends and got hit in the mouth. He visited his dentist many times over the year and each time an x-ray was taken due to the pain, yet the dentist never saw anything wrong.
I knew that my colleague had a long standing history of grinding his teeth. I had a feeling that could be irritating the tooth which had been injured. He recently got a bite guard but the tooth pain continued. I explained that I too have a history of grinding my teeth and often work on myself if ever my teeth ache from too much grinding.
I let him know that I would adjust the plates in his head including where the tooth sits in the bone to see if it would help. I felt restrictions around the eyes, temples, jaw and mouth, then gently held those areas until they released. He was so relaxed that he fell asleep as I worked on the areas. The next day he reached out to let me know that his tooth felt a lot better.
This is another great example of why I love when patients ask me about symptoms that I could work on. It’s always worth mentioning in order to see if chiropractic alignment can help.
