Creating a Legacy: Preserving the Heart
of What We Love About Sport
Dear MSU FCA Family,
Have you noticed all the athletes and coaches who have been sharing about Jesus in pre- or post-game interviews? Have you heard the stories of student-athletes and coaches gathering in team bible studies, praying before and after games, baptizing teammates, etc.? The spiritual growth that happened in both the Ohio State and Notre Dame football teams this year was so special to hear about and see play out on the field. There are even more testimonies at Boise State and Texas too. I saw former MSU quarterback Sawyer Robertson (now at Baylor) take a knee during the game, put his hand on an injured player on the opposing team, and pray immediately for that player. You and I agree that this is all incredible, but you might also be thinking, "This transfer portal and paying players is destroying everything we love about sports." That may be true, but it's not the truth. The truth is that man's NIL (name, image, and likeness) is colliding with God's original NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) right before our eyes, just like it has for thousands of years. Is paying players still out of control? Of course! But have you noticed how God is working? Are you hearing the whole story? It reminds me of the passage in Isaiah 43:18-19:
"But forget all that — it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland."
The Lord goes on to say in verse 21 that he is doing this so that His people will someday honor Him before the whole world. The more I get to know the Lord, the more I see how much he enjoys flipping dire situations into triumph. That is happening right now in the arena of sports, and it won't stop! Do you not see it? Athletes and coaches speaking up is just the beginning of his true desire to see ALL step into full union with Him. This is what Jesus prayed in John 17:20-26 for all of us to enter and remain.
As we begin a new semester at Mississippi State, we believe that the reality spoken about in Isaiah is coming to pass in our midst. We are excited to share in this journey with you to see athletes and coaches transformed by the person of Jesus through power and work of the Holy Spirit.
