A Message From The President |
Hello Everyone,
I write to you as I watch the Olympics Opening Ceremony in Paris, France; where, for a moment, humanity celebrates its diversity and its unity, its progress and its history, its victories, and its failures. What a day! I also sit in awe of a time when here in the United States we are on the cusp of nominating the first Woman of Color to lead a major party’s presidential ticket. How incredible!
Let us celebrate this moment keeping in mind that Women of Color, while woefully underrepresented in both LIS and in academia, presently lead our discipline, taking on the burden of guiding LIS efforts, in practice and in research, into the future: Carla Hayden, Librarian of the U. S. Congress, Cyndee Landrum, Acting Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Cindy Hohl, President of the American Library Association, and Vanessa Irvin, incoming 2024-2025 President of ALISE. And so, it is with great pride that I follow their leadership and commit to service and impact through the fantastic opportunities available at ALISE.
Join me!
The 2024 Annual Conference, October 14-17 in Portland, Oregon promises to be an excellent opportunity to engage with a remarkable slate of papers, panels, and posters, as well as the Opening Plenary Keynote session and other sessions. I am proud of our community, and grateful for the hard work put in by both the conference planning committee and ALISE office staff. Explore the full conference agenda here, and take advantage of early bird rates to renew your membership and register for the conference today.
Finally, as we move towards October, the ALISE Board of Directors will be welcoming new board members and committee/task force volunteers. We greatly appreciate the service and leadership provided by the ALISE volunteers, and we continue to count on your contribution to the association. We are grateful to you all for your dedication, support, and active participation in ALISE.
See you in Portland!

Secretary/Treasurer's Summary: 2nd Quarter FY24
The financial performance for the first half of FY24 closely mirrors the patterns of the past two years, with hopes to deviate positively through increased conference and membership engagement, going forward. To that end, the ALISE Board and Committee volunteers have worked to develop two new initiatives launching in Fall 2024.
We are excited to host the first session for the Emerging Scholars this September with the series running into 2025. This program supports new scholars’ needs as they enter the field of LIS education, to support their growth in the profession. Additionally, we are delighted to highlight three Leadership Interns at the Annual Conference as part of the Leadership Development Internship’s inaugural year. These interns will participate in a variety of activities, sessions, and governance events designed to empower the next generation of leadership for ALISE and in the broader field of LIS. ALISE continues to explore new revenue potential through creative ideas such as mini webinars, podcast series, or mid-career programming.
ALISE is in a time of renewal as we welcome three incoming board members, anticipate two new co-editors for JELIS, and two co-chairs to the CDDC. As we approach 2025 and the end of the current strategic direction, the board is already ruminating on the development of a new strategic plan to reinvigorate our community and bolster our financial position.

2024 Annual Conference: Registration Open!
Registration is now open for the 2024 Annual Conference! The ALISE '24 conference theme is “Ethics & Evolution of Truth & Information.” With this theme, we ask these questions: How do the library and information professions define, interrogate, and uphold notions of truth? How might people and communities be supported or harmed by innovations in information creation and sharing? What are ethical issues raised by rapid adoption of new tools and technologies for creating, remixing, and sharing information? Join us in Portland, OR October 14-17, 2024 to explore these questions and more!
The 2024 ALISE Annual Conference will feature Keynote Speaker Dr. Steve Easterbrook, Director of the School of the Environment and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto. His current research is in climate informatics, where he studies how climate scientists develop computational models to improve their understanding of earth systems and climate change. His latest book, "Computing the Climate: How we know what we know about climate change" tells the story of climate models and the scientists who build them.
Register by August 15th to claim the early bird discount!
