CFCC Small Business Center Helps Local Businesses During Tough Times
|
|
Right now, one in four small businesses has temporarily closed their doors because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, 43% of small business owners believe they have less than six months before they have to shut down permanently. These are unprecedented times for all business owners. Before calling it quits, we encourage you to reach out to CFCC for guidance.
Our
Small Business Center
has played an essential role in helping business owners stay afloat and deal with the unknown. By offering counseling and free online webinars, we equip local small business leaders with the tools they need to persevere. "We are trying to help businesses gain access to capital, find resources to stay sustainable, and help navigate the CARES Act, " says CFCC Small Business Center Director, Jerry Coleman. “During normal times, we’re here to help businesses plan, start, and grow, but now we’re focused on helping businesses survive."

CFCC's Humanities and Fine Arts Department is excited to share that an exhibition of the
2020 Student Art Show
is being featured
online
.
This virtual exhibit is the first of its kind for CFCC.
Each year, students' work is presented at the Wilma W. Daniels Gallery and winners are chosen by an independent juror. We're so happy that this event was reimagined to give our students the recognition they deserve!
“It is an understatement to say this year is unique and has posed challenges to the 2020 CFCC Student Show. For students and faculty, the show is a celebration of the artwork students have made during their time at CFCC... Working with Bob Unchester, Curator at the Cameron Art Museum, we were able to develop the show virtually.”

Thanks, CFCC! Student Transfer Success
|
|
These comments always make us smile. We'd like to share some kind words from a pleased parent on our Facebook page...
"Community college has been the perfect start at higher education for three of my kids, two of whom are attending CFCC. It’s given them the chance to figure out what they want to study (they’ve changed at least once) and ease into college without the pressures and culture shock of University life straight out of high school. And...not to mention, a more economical way to go! My son starts UNCW this fall debt-free. Thanks, CFCC!"

CFCC's Jessica Gaffney Makes Masks for NHRMC

CFCC Arts and Humanities Theater Program Chair Jessica Gaffney made 40 masks for NHRMC just last weekend, bringing the total masks she has created for NHRMC to 112 masks.
Jessica contributes to the Facebook group
MASKS FOR NHRMC HEROES
and answers sewing questions from the group. She worked to rewrite
mask-making instructions
to make them more user-friendly. Thanks to Jessica for simplifying the process!
More sewers are need, so if anyone wants to donate or volunteer, please reach out to the

CFCC’s Landscape Gardening Program Donates Plants to Maides Park
|
|
Twice every year, CFCC landscape gardening students plant vegetable gardens for the Maides Park seniors group and afterschool program.
Because of COVID-19, students could not attend this year, so CFCC Landscape Gardening Program Director Ken Wells gathered a small group of individuals to install this spring’s vegetable garden. The team used plants from the what-would-have-been Landscape Gardening annual plant sale. We're glad these plants went to a great home. Happy spring, everyone!

CFCC Hosts COVID-19 Drive-Thru Testing Site
|
|
CFCC is partnering with New Hanover County Public Health to assist with COVID-19 testing in the county. Student Lot #2 on Hanover Street behind the Wilson Center has been designated as a drive-thru testing site for symptomatic residents (who are pre-screened by phone) to be tested at no cost. At this time, testing
will be
available through May 22. See schedule below.
Testing time:
1 - 6 pm
Testing Dates:
May 6 - 8
May 13 - 15
May 20 - 22
Screening Process:
Residents who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms can call the Coronavirus Call Center at 910.798.6800 to be screened by a public health nurse. Those who meet the criteria for testing will then be referred to the testing site at a designated day and time.
Testing Eligibility:
The county’s screening process will allow for testing to be conducted on anyone with mild symptoms, which is less restrictive than the current testing protocol in place by the state and CDC, and will provide insight into mild cases of COVID-19 in our community. Residents eligible for this expanded testing are those who:
- Are currently experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
- Have limited access to a healthcare provider who will order a COVID-19 test, financial barriers to obtain a test, or have no direct healthcare access.
- Have been pre-screened by the Coronavirus Call Center and provided with an appointment for testing.

CFCC Cosmetology Program Changed My Life!
|
|
We'd like to share this stude
nt story that will brighten your day:
I am attending Cape Fear Community College for a Diploma in Cosmetology. I cannot tell you how much this program has changed my life. I feel like I am finally blossoming into the person I have always dreamed I could be. This program helps me brighten and build up so many different individuals daily. I always heard those cliché comments about finding something you’re passionate about so your career doesn’t feel like a job and I thought people were crazy...until I stepped foot on the “salon” floor at CFCC. Every day I wake up excited about what I already have planned or what will “walk-in.”
For years I dreamed about going to Cosmetology school. I was afraid to pursue it, but nevertheless, it remained in the back of my mind. I was scared about what people may think of my career path and not take me seriously as an individual because “I just do hair”. Now that I am older and wiser, I understand the importance of chasing your dreams and how much I can use my skills to change the lives of people or the less fortunate. I am so grateful that CFCC is making that possible for me.
