| | |
APRIL 17: Snow Loads in ASCE 7-22, What’s New and Different
Presenter:
Michael O’Rourke | Prof. Emeritus Civil Engineering | Rensselaer
| | | | |
TOPICS COVERED IN THIS PRESENTATION:
-
The New to ASCE 7-22 ground snow load (GSL). The prior GSL were based upon a specific hazard level – 50 year mean recurrence interval for ordinary structures. The new risk-targeted GSL are now based upon a specific probability of collapse.
| |
-
The new wind parameter W2. Snow drift size in ASCE 7-22 is now based upon W2, as well as the traditional upwind fetch and GSL parameters. This new parameter accounts for the fact that the potential for strong wind in winter varies significantly across the US.
-
Windward snow drifts. In ASCE 7-22, the rise-to-run for windward snow drifts has changed from the prior 1:4 to 1:8, based upon observations from Norway.
-
Changes resulting from user questions or comments, such as, “My project has additional roof insulation and I expect that the roof snow loads will now be larger, but the Ct value for my unvented roof isn’t a function of the roof R-value”, and “How tall should a parapet wall be to prevent snow from a new taller addition forming an unexpected-during-original-design snow drift atop the existing roof?”
-
New provisions in ASCE 7-22 for snow drifts at locations such as parapet wall corners, where winds from two different directions result in drift loads that overlap.
