A Legacy of Service—and the Courage to Ask “What’s Next?”

A conversation with John Gallina, co-founder and CEO of Purple Heart Homes

Some people leave the military, but their commitment to serving others never leaves them.

As Veterans Day approaches, My Future Purpose welcomes John Gallina, combat-wounded Iraq veteran and co-founder of Purple Heart Homes, for a conversation about service, legacy, and finding purpose in life’s next chapter.

John and his battle buddy, Dale Beatty, returned from Iraq with wounds that changed their lives. Together, they created Purple Heart Homes to help other veterans—particularly older veterans—live safely and with dignity in their own homes.

A ramp can restore someone’s freedom to come and go. A wider doorway can make room for a wheelchair. An accessible bathroom can help a veteran maintain independence and give a family greater peace of mind.

That mission has reached the nation’s front yard. Purple Heart Homes was selected to exhibit at the 2026 HUD Innovative Housing Showcase on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Under the theme “Made in America,” the event brought together builders, manufacturers, and innovators to demonstrate ways to expand housing supply, reduce construction costs, and create pathways to homeownership. For the organization John helped build, participating meant bringing the housing needs of veterans with disabilities into a national conversation about housing’s future—a meaningful part of his legacy.

Making this work possible takes persistence: finding sponsors, attracting media attention, rallying communities, and continually raising funds. John understands what it takes to turn compassion into action—and keep that work going.

His own journey has included health challenges related to burn-pit exposure in Iraq and several back surgeries. Now a new grandfather, John has announced his retirement and is preparing to explore his next calling. He may not know exactly what comes next, but we suspect helping others will be part of it. Service seems to be written into his DNA.

Five reasons you won’t want to miss this discussion:

  1. Give Veterans Day deeper meaning. Hear directly from someone whose commitment to serving continued long after he returned from combat.
  2. Discover how a legacy takes shape. Learn how John and Dale turned their shared experience into practical help for veterans and their families.
  3. Follow the journey from local action to the National Mall. Hear about building an organization whose mission earned a place at a national housing showcase.
  4. See how people make change possible. Explore the role of sponsors, volunteers, media, and neighbors in helping veterans live more safely and independently.
  5. Reflect on your own “what’s next.” Join an honest conversation about stepping away from an organization you helped build, embracing uncertainty, and finding a new way to contribute.

Join us for a conversation about the legacy we build, the people we help, and the purpose still waiting ahead.

About John Gallina

John Gallina is a combat-wounded Iraq veteran, author, speaker, and co-founder of Purple Heart Homes.

His military service ended, but his commitment to serving others became a lifelong calling.

In 2008, John and his battle buddy, Dale Beatty, founded Purple Heart Homes to help veterans—particularly older veterans and those with disabilities—live safely and independently in their own homes.

Through wheelchair ramps, wider doorways, accessible bathrooms, and other essential improvements, the organization helps restore dignity, ease daily challenges, and give veterans and their families greater peace of mind.

Drawing on his own combat injuries and experiences, John understands that asking for help can be difficult. He has built connections grounded in the trust veterans share, creating opportunities for honest conversations and practical solutions. His approach begins with listening and recognizing the value of every veteran’s experience.

Building that mission has required much more than construction. John has brought together sponsors, volunteers, donors, and community leaders, while generating media attention and continually raising funds. That work helped bring Purple Heart Homes to the 2026 HUD Innovative Housing Showcase on the National Mall, placing veterans’ housing needs in a national conversation about innovative housing solutions.

John also co-authored Wounded Homecoming with Dale, sharing their story of resilience, friendship, and continued service. As a speaker and advocate, he encourages communities to recognize veterans’ talents and create meaningful ways for them to contribute.

Now a new grandfather, John has announced his retirement and is considering his next calling. After navigating his own health challenges and several back surgeries, he brings a personal perspective to questions of resilience, transition, and purpose. His next chapter is still taking shape, but helping others will surely remain part of the story.
