Friends:
There’s lots of worldly wisdom about the debts that we’re obligated to fulfill. Some people abide by the adage that stipulates: “Nobody owes you anything, but you owe yourself everything.” Another saying suggests: “You owe yourself the same love that you give to everyone else.” One author – writing about the 2008 global financial crisis -- has axiomatically advised: “Everyone owes everyone and no one can pay.”
This Sunday’s featured scripture reading (Romans 13:8-10) conveys an uncomplicated spiritual imperative. The Apostle Paul challenged the early believers to accept responsibility for loving one another. That’s it. In Paul’s estimation, that one thing was/is everything.
I don’t disagree; and I think it might be helpful to add a modern-day qualifier for the benefit of those of us who tend to do more than our fair share of the heavy lifting. I’ll say more when I see you. The sermon is entitled: Indebted: Care but Don’t Carry.
Love you. That one thing is everything.
