Coaches Corner
Happy Monday Team!
What an end to a great season of Storm XC!! Saturday brought incredible weather and incredible performances! When you finish a championship race, there are some who left elated and some leave deflated. The goal is for everyone to have a PR and an incredible race! And sometimes that just doesn’t happen…
My encouragement to the entire team is keep enjoying the journey! For those of you who killed it! Boom and great job! I saw many PR’s over 1 and even 2 minutes!!! For those who didn’t have a great race, for whatever reason, learn from it… but don’t dwell on it. Becoming a champion is not an overnight process. Being an all American requires great races and even seasons, mixed with bummer races and sometimes seasons. There isn’t one champion who would tell you the road was easy… Everyone wants to be the champ, but only ONE can stand on the top of the podium at the end of a race. We have athletes fighting for that top position and I applaud them… and they give the rest of the team a target to get after in practice. The majority of any team is being “part of the team”. You are working to improve their position and time. You set goals and work hard to achieve them. The whole range of athletes are important for Storm and we as coaches value EVERY ONE OF YOU! I loved seeing the “team” aspect Saturday when I watched Ryan Venegas have an incredible race, which was impressive on its own. He might have deserved a break but instead I saw him come down the finishing shoot to cheer on his teammates!! Boom Ryan!!
We’ll talk more about the races at the banquet, but how many of you did I tell directly: “you’ve turned into a runner this season”!!
I warned you at the beginning of the season: what you put in, you’ll get out. I enjoyed experiencing the entire team receive the rewards of hard work!! Medals… Team Trophies… Smiles… High Fives… Hugs… Awesomeness….
Congratulations!
For a chunk of you we are on to post season which starts tonight! I’ll see you there!
For those who have ended a great season, look for an email in the next week or so to give some guidance for post season training. TAKE A COUPLE WEEKS OFF, and then, if you want to make big jumps in track, it’ll be time to start hitting the road again.
Running becomes something that is in you… an itch… an urge… a desire… part of your life… If it’s in you, don’t let it die during the offseason… As Prefontaine said: “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift”. Keep cultivating that gift… whatever you plant in the offseason is going to flourish in Track!!
See you tonight or see you at the banquet!
Thank you for an awesome season team!
