Celebrate Tech Day of Pink on October 9th, 2025!

Join me on Thursday, October 9th in rallying the global tech community in the fight against breast cancer! There are 3 awesome ways you can participate:

1) Wear pink & post on socials using the hashtag #TechInPink2025.

I encourage you to add a note about why the mission to end breast cancer is important to you or share how those in your network can take actions to reduce their risk. Your simple, zero-cost effort raises money for BCRF as many tech executives donate for every post.

2) Attend the BCRF Benefit Concert in person, by registering here- hosted in Long Island City, NY.

3) Donate to the BCRF- click here. Every little bit helps to find the cure and eradicate breast cancer!

Make an impact. It really is that simple as every post generates a new donation to breast cancer research.

Hero to Zero on a Rooftop

This weekend we were in NYC celebrating my husband’s birthday. On Friday night, we had a reservation at a midtown rooftop restaurant we had never visited before. The setting was charming in every way, with beautiful décor, a simple but appealing menu, and a friendly wait staff.

At first, we were seated at a table for two. When our three oversized appetizer plates arrived, the waiter quickly realized the small table could not hold both our food and empty plates. He offered to move us to a nearby table for four. It was thoughtful and seamless, a moment where service felt attentive and guest centered. We settled in and enjoyed our dishes, grateful for the care.

Then the story shifted. Before our main course arrived, the manager approached and asked for a favor. A party of four had a reservation, and he needed our table. He promised drinks or dessert on the house if we would move. It did not feel like a choice. It felt like a directive. And in an almost absurd twist, he directed us back to the same cramped table where we had started. Seconds later, our large entrée plates arrived and were squeezed onto the tiny surface again.

The issue was not only the inconvenience. It was that the manager overrode a commitment his own staff had already made. The server had solved a problem and created a better experience for us. By undoing that solution, the manager undercut his team and diminished the guest experience at the same time. A stronger leader would have coached the staff later, behind the scenes, rather than course-correcting mid-service at the expense of a customer.

There was also a larger principle at play. One guest’s reservation should not be prioritized over another’s experience that is already in motion. Making new guests happy should never come at the expense of existing ones, especially when celebrating a special occasion.

At the end of the meal I asked to speak with the manager again. We thanked him for the dessert but explained how disappointing it felt to be asked to move mid-meal, and how it made us feel less important than the new party. He grew defensive and framed it as a business decision rather than acknowledging the customer perspective or even supporting his own staff. It was a rookie mistake, and sadly, my attempt to share the customer view fell on deaf ears.

The experience left me with this reminder: hospitality is not about perfect food or stylish décor. Those things matter, but the real test is in the choices made when things get complicated.

Great service protects the customer’s experience, honors the promises already made, and shows respect for the staff delivering it. Anything less leaves a bitter aftertaste, no matter how sweet the dessert.

QUICK POLL: As the restaurant manager, how would you handle the situation?

TIP of the Week

Always keep Commitments

When you make a commitment, whether to a customer or a colleague, treat it as non-negotiable.

If circumstances change, honor the original promise first, then find creative ways to solve for the new challenge without undoing trust that has already been built.

The Fight that Touches us All

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this one feels deeply personal to me. I have seen women I love, and even a few men I know, struggle through the fight against cancer, especially breast cancer. My oldest aunt lost her battle two years ago, after enduring a mastectomy and years of courage. My mother faced it too, but caught it early enough for treatment. A dear friend went through treatment silently during the Covid years, carrying that heavy burden in isolation. And recently, I had my own scare, thankfully, it did not manifest fully.

The truth is, no one is immune. This disease shows up when you least expect it and can turn your world upside down. I know, because it has disrupted the normalcy of my world and my family circle more than once. We are never fully prepared.

But I still believe there is so much we can do. Caring for our mental health helps us stay vigilant about our physical health. Making the appointments, doing the self-checks, and having the difficult conversations are essential. There is so much knowledge available, and it is on us to engage, learn, and apply it.

Supporting the cause can take many forms. You can donate to organizations driving research and finding cures. You can assist women as they navigate treatment and survival. Or it can be as simple as hosting a tea party with friends, creating a safe space to share, laugh, and listen. Sometimes, being a kind presence is the greatest gift of all.

Whatever way you choose, just choose. Find a way to be there. Because when it comes to cancer, the fight belongs to all of us. And the time to stand together has never been more needed than it is now. If you need an ear that listens or a shoulder to lean on, I'm here for you. Reach out, whenever you're ready.
