SKIN CARE TIPS FOR COLD WEATHER

Cold weather can make your skin dry, tight and rough., Take steps to relieve and prevent water loss with many if not all of the above products.

MOISTURIZE Applying moisturizer regularly can help prevent water loss and keep your skin hydrated. Apply moisturizer right after bathing or washing your hands. Additionally, it may be beneficial to use fragrance-free cleansers, as fragrance may irritate your skin and cause dryness.

DO NOT SCRUB YOUR SKIN When bathing or washing your face and body, being gentle can help avoid irritating your skin and prevent dryness. Use your hands or a very soft wash cloth, and avoid soaps or cleansers containing scrubbing beads.

TAKE SHORTER, LUKEWARM SHOWERS Though we may be inclined to take long, hot showers during cold weather, doing so may actually contribute to skin dryness. Research has concluded that long, continuous water exposure damages the skin's protective barrier, with the effects being even more pronounced when the water is hot. Limit your bathing timer to around 10 - 15 minutes using lukewarm water.

STAY HYDRATED The amount of fluids you drink can impact your skin, and drinking more water may help you and your skin stay hydrated and healthy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests the following:

  • Have a bottle of water with you throughout the day and keep it filled.
  • Choose water over drinks with lots of sugar, including when eating out.
  • Plain coffee, tea or sparkling water can also be healthy hydration options.

IT'S TIME FOR A FRESH START!

The beginning of a new year is a great time to get your cosmetic items in order. Are any of your products past their prime? Here are some general guidelines:

  • Wet products have the potential to grow bacteria and need to be replaced more frequently.
  • Products used near the mouth or especially the eyes are particularly important to keep clean and fresh.
  • Be sure to toss anything you've used while having an infection.
  • A change in color, texture, or order in any product is a sign that it is past its prime.
