News From St. Gertrude
With grateful hearts, we extend our sincere thanks to all our parishioners, volunteers, and staff who helped make our journey from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday so truly beautiful and meaningful. From the joyful procession of palms to the quiet reverence of Holy Week and the triumphant celebration of the Resurrection, each liturgy was enriched by your presence, your prayer, and your generous sharing of time and talent. Whether you served in visible roles or worked quietly behind the scenes, your dedication helped create worship experiences that uplifted and inspired our entire community.
As we continue through this joyful Easter season, we carry forward the spirit of hope and renewal that you helped bring to life in such powerful ways. The celebration of Easter is not just a single day, but a season that invites us to live as people of the Resurrection—sharing Christ’s love, joy, and peace with one another. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do to strengthen our parish community and to deepen our shared sense of faith and connection.

Care for Real Collections
St. Gertrude will host a collection drive for Care for Real on April 25-26. Our Care for Real collection takes place on the fourth weekend of each month, and our asylum seekers’ collection is held on the first weekend of each month.
SNAP is one of the most effective ways to address food insecurity in the United States. However, as eligibility requirements change, many of our neighbors—especially seniors and others without exemptions—are at risk of losing their benefits. New requirements to work or volunteer 80 hours per month and report this to the state can be difficult to meet, increasing the risk of food insecurity.
As a result, Care for Real anticipates a growing need for their services. For more information, including current needs and ways to give, please visit https://linktr.ee/cfrchicago or follow their Facebook and Instagram pages.
We are grateful for your continued generosity in supporting Care for Real as they provide food and essential supplies to neighbors in need.

Growing in Faith
“Walking together and leading our parish, toward the fullness of life in Christ."
Today’s readings reveal the dual realities of the early Church. On one hand, many of Jesus’ followers experienced trauma and disbelief, much like Saint Thomas the Apostle after witnessing Jesus’ horrific public execution. On the other hand, a community was forming—one marked by a shared sense of purpose and a deep commitment to Jesus’ teachings, lived out through the apostles.
As Christians around the world celebrated the Paschal Mystery last weekend, the Church also welcomed a record number of new Catholics at the Easter Vigil. While this excitement and energy make for compelling headlines, they also call local parishes and parishioners to reflect on what it truly means to grow into a new community. We are challenged to remember our ancestors in faith—their despair, hope, and zeal. These are not merely stories to be retold, but a blueprint for what parish life can and should look like today.
Our parish continues to change. We are not the same community we were 10, 50, or 100 years ago. There are new needs, new faces, and new hopes. With each new generation, we are, in a sense, “remembering.” This ongoing renewal calls for a spirit of zeal as we recommit ourselves “to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread, and to the prayers.” This task is not the sole responsibility of Fr. Sergio, the parish staff, or a select group of parishioners. Each of us is called to be a pilgrim people—walking together and leading our parish toward the fullness of life in Christ.
