A Few Changes Are Coming to Our Monthly Newsletter

We’ve been rethinking how to make this newsletter more useful and enjoyable for you. Starting this month, you’ll notice a cleaner layout, shorter and easier-to-read stories, and a simpler way to find the updates that matter most to you.

We're also adding something new: from now on, every issue will close with a small thank you just for our readers — a gesture of gratitude for your ongoing support and interest.

Science Blogs from the Field Return!

The Arctic field season is underway, and so are our Science Blogs from the Field. This summer, Manomet scientists and partners are leading three simultaneous shorebird research expeditions across northern Alaska—the most we've ever conducted at one time. Teams are surveying breeding shorebirds across the Arctic, studying and capturing Whimbrels in their breeding grounds, and deploying acoustic monitors to explore whether sound can complement traditional visual surveys for estimating shorebird breeding populations.

Get a glimpse into life and science in one of the world's most remote landscapes.

Our Summer Season Begins at Myles Standish State Forest

Out of the banding lab and into the field, our summer interns have kicked off ongoing research at Myles Standish State Forest, right near our headquarters. Towhees, warblers, and more — we want to know who's nesting in the pine barrens this season, and what their presence tells us about how this globally declining habitat is recovering.

Know an Inspiring Teacher? Share This Opportunity!

The Wade Institute for Science Education is offering an immersive two-day workshop for educators in grades 3–8, where participants will learn about storyline teaching, participate in community science projects, canoe on the Slocum's River, and explore forests, wetlands, salt marshes, and estuaries while discovering new ways to bring real-world science into the classroom. Teachers will leave with classroom-ready resources, hands-on teaching strategies, and the confidence to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

"The Art & Science Of Recovering Shorebird Populations"

Osterville Photography Exhibit Reception

Join us for a special exhibit reception at the Osterville Village Library on Wednesday, July 8, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. and step into the extraordinary world of migratory shorebirds and the global effort to protect them. Meet Manomet’s President and the Photographers to hear firsthand stories behind the images—what it takes to follow these birds across continents and bring their journeys to life.

Featuring stunning photography, field insights, and the latest tracking technology, the evening reveals how scientists trace shorebirds across hemispheres, why Cape Cod is one of the most critical stopover sites in the Western Hemisphere, and how photography has become an essential tool in conservation.

Together, these stories illuminate the science behind the recovery of declining shorebird populations while honoring the people and partnerships driving this work forward. Through art, science, and collaboration, the exhibit connects Cape Cod to a global network of researchers and communities working to ensure these remarkable travelers continue their journeys for generations to come.
