Orthopedic + Fracture Specialists is proud to announce that Richard D. Southgate M.D. will be joining the providers in the practice of Total Joint Replacement beginning October 2019. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Richard Southgate is joining Orthopedic + Fracture Specialists from Kaiser Permanente’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery, where he’s been practicing since 2017. From a young age, he had developed a love for science and a desire to help others, so medicine was a natural career choice.

“What attracted me to orthopedic surgery and joint replacements was their pronounced effect on the quality of life. My main goal is to get patients back to their hobbies and be as independent as possible.” Dr. Southgate believes that the precise treatment varies based on the patient, and shared decision-making is paramount in determining a plan of care.

He earned his Doctor of Medicine from University of Chicago in 2010, during which he completed a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. His residency in orthopedic surgery was at University of Rochester, followed by a clinical fellowship in hip and knee replacement surgery at the University of California. Dr. Southgate specializes in hip replacement surgery through the anterior, posterior, and lateral approaches; total and partial knee replacement; and complex revision surgery. In addition to Total Joints, his areas of practice include Trauma/Fractures and General Orthopedics. He is also fluent in Spanish.
