8 Leadership Lessons

Learned While Traveling

Early in our marriage, Barry and I made a goal to travel. We believe it is the best form of education. But traveling to 5 countries in a short 30-day period really brought to life some leadership lessons and I have been pondering how these related to business.

Leadership lessons can be found in full view in all our experiences. Pondering to think about our experiences can be a rich way of developing our leadership art. If these 8 travel lessons resonated with you, we’d love to connect.

HPA Case Study: Green Bay Community Church

Green Bay Community Church vision is to help lead people towards Christ and introduce them to a spiritual family, with the ultimate goal of getting people connected to the body of Christ.

In this Case Study, our team spoke with Troy Murphy, Lead Teaching and Vision Pastor about his overall experience working with Traci and the HPA team.

The truth was, while his leadership team was experienced, what Troy wanted was to invest in them, empower them to make decisions and encourage them to lead authentically.

Nikki Bergen shared 10 lessons kids learn from travel. Her family just returned fro Canada after being in 5 countries. Read some of her reflections from her travels.

  1. There is more than one "right" way to live. Different cultures, foods, customs...show your kids there is not just one "normal."
  2. Adaptability is superpower. When kids adjust to new places they learn to be flexible themselves – a life skill that goes well beyond travel.
  3. Memories are worth more than things. That new gadget won't be remembered years later, but that troll forest in Norway? 100%.
  4. Language is a bridge. Learning basic words in another language shows respect and builds connection. Kids learn not everyone speaks english.
  5. Pack your sense of humor (& snacks). Delays and long travel days come with a territory. Coffee and chocolate help! Teach resilience.
  6. The world is the best classroom. You'll learn more traveling than any school class can teach.
  7. Get out of your comfort zone. Like swimming in a freezing fjord. Seeing you try new things helps them build courage.
  8. Food tells stories. Meals reveal culture, traditions, and national pride. Kids discover that food is part of identity, and not just something to fill you up.
  9. Time is the one thing you can't get back. There is never a "perfect" time. Kids grow up fast, life gets busy, and opportunities pass. Go now – the memories will last forever.
  10. Kindness is universal!

Are you or your team feeling stuck? Now is the time to discover and learn how to best utilize your strengths.
