Spring 2023

President's Letter

Welcome. The Board has been busy setting up workshops and tours for the AGASC. We have already had a trip in January up to Clairemont to the Museum of Art for an exhibit by Keke Cribbs, Richard Marquis, and David Svenson. We had our first general meeting this year at the Sefton Mansion where we had a group discussion and a potluck. We have four workshops planned, two for neon immersion and two cold working. We also have a tour of Coatings by Sandberg in June. Hope you can take advantage of some of the things we have planned.

The AGASC is going to hold our next general meeting on Sunday, July 9th at Tom Marosz’s studio with a kiln repair and maintenance Q&A before the meeting. So, mark your calendars and plan now to join us. Check the calendar for the time and directions as well as other events we have planned for the year.

Our annual exhibition in Gallery 21 is going to be in December this year. It will run from Dec 8th to the 18th. We are always proud of the exhibitions we present because of all the pieces our very talented artists enter into the show.

ACE Members’ Show in Palm Desert

The Artists Council in Palm Desert is an arts organization that has 550 artists members, mostly painters. Every year they have their ACE exhibition for the members, which is a juried show. Four AGASC members are also members of the Artists Council. This year all four got in the show, Jack Wade, Jon Simpson, Paul Messink, and Candace Kahn. It was no easy feat, as there were 287 entries from 199 members and only 83 entries were selected to be shown.

Schantz Galleries Contemporary Glass

By Marti Blair

Oh boy, yes, I visited Schantz Galleries recently while traveling with Graham’s friend Paul and his wife to Vermont from Connecticut. Wow, I did not realize that Massachusetts was in between those 2 states and that the gallery could be on the way, but then I found it! And they agreed to go. The main exhibit was Chihuly (most of the pieces were sold as it was the last day of the exhibit)…and now Bertil Vallien is the one. In the Berkshires…Nancy Callan was a recent exhibit as well, and you will see more.

Jim Schantz is the owner with his wife Kim. He has been here over 40 years, and is an artist himself. He is a painter and shows at Pucker Gallery in Boston for over 30 years. He attended UC Davis for his masters and studied with Wayne Thiebaud!

You may subscribe to their emails at jim@schantzgalleries.com or go to the website schantzgalleries.com for more info.

AGASC Demo at Kathleen Mitchell's Studio

Kathleen Mitchell hosted for the Art Glass Association of Southern California. The incomparable Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen and Jasen Johnsen! It was a sold-out packed studio for this great event. What a treat watching this amazing pair of glassblowers. The demo piece that Karen and Jasen made for us on March 19th will be donated for our Collector's Corner silent auction!!!

Transformations in Glass: Vitreous Funk, Fantasy, and Light, an exhibit at the Clairmont Art Museum

On Saturday January 7th the Art Glass Association of Southern California took a bus trip with our members to view an exhibit at the Clairmont Art Museum, Los Angeles. The exhibition presents the work of Kéké Cribbs, Richard Marquis, and David Svenson, recognized glass artists who were influenced by the Claremont art community during a pivotal time in their artistic development. All three artists were influenced by Richard Petterson who was a ceramic professor at Scripps College, and director of the Fine Arts Building at the Fairplex for over 30 years, and a pioneer in the ceramic and glass movement.

All three artists were influenced by Richard Petterson, a pioneer in the ceramic and glass movement who was a ceramic professor at Scripps College, and director of the Fine Arts Building at the Los Angeles County Fair for over 30 years. In the early 1990s David Svenson met Kéké Cribbs and Richard Marquis at the Pilchuck Glass School. When he learned how they were all influenced by the Claremont art community in the 1960s, the idea for the exhibition was born. Each artist has followed their own unique path, but they share a passionate obsession with glass techniques.

This exhibit solidifies a complete circle in these artists’ careers, with David and Kéké honoring Richard Marquis for the knowledge and inspiration that he has given them. Seattle art critic Regina Hackett once wrote and was quoted at the Corning Museum of Glass that, “If Dale Chihuly is the tide that raised all boats, Richard Marquis is the craft intelligence that makes them seaworthy.”

Art at Good Samaritan Retirement Home

Once a quarter, Diana Griffin (Queenie Glass and Sass) supports the afternoon art program at the Good Samaritan Retirement Home in Rancho San Diego. She donates her time and material so it is no cost to the residents. This February, Norma Maroz joined her to assist the residents in creating a Valentine’s Day heart suncatcher. Diana pre-fuses a variety of glass pieces to ensure no sharp edges so residents avoid cuts while assembling their artwork. “I find it very rewarding to work with the seniors and give back to the community”.  If you are interested in helping out at a future class or would like to donate any scrap glass (either 90 or 96), please email her at queenieglass@gmail.com.
