TEP PUBLIC MEETING
August 20, 5:30 - 7:00 pm
Ward III Community Rm
Constructing the Vine Substation
| | |
TEP moves forward with plans to construct a large substation on the border of Jefferson Park and Desert Mallow neighborhood (formerly North University). The plan would bring overhead lines through many neighborhoods, including Desert Mallow and Jefferson Park. The UA Area Plan stipulates no overhead lines in the area. TEP will seek a Special Exception permit to construct the substation.
The Undergrounding Coalition and Jefferson Park have worked very hard to have the UA Area Plan respected. What happens now depends on the city and the response from the neighborhoods.

| | Historic Jefferson Park home to disappear! | | |
A permit request has been submitted to demolish this iconic historic Lester home and its adjoining guest house built by Annie Lester, our original homesteader. An important piece of Tucson history is set to fall! Our latest information is that the permit will be granted. Every home that loses its historic status by whatever means endangers the neighborhood historic status. If the neighborhood loses too many homes, the property tax benefit for contributing properties could be in jeopardy.
| | |
Mayor and Council upheld the zoning Examiner's ruling for Broadway and Euclid- TEP must underground in that intersection. Troubling, however, is that they did overturn the Zoning Examiner's ruling for Grant/ Oracle and for 36th and Kino. TEP will be allowed to overhead the lines.
See above proposal for substation next to Jefferson Park (above)
| | The information kiosk is installed! | | | |
Jefferson Park Information kiosk is here!
Soon to be filled with the history of the area as well as current neighborhood information. Thank you all!
Jason Butler, who created our metal entrance signs at Park and Euclid finished the install of the kiosk. Thanks to Banner for the location. Thanks to neighbors, Liz, Kathy, Colleen, and Joan, who helped with design and arrangements. And thanks to all the donations from our neighbors that made this possible. It can be seen at the corner of Warren and Lester.
Visual barrier between hospital and neighborhood
Still in conversations with Banner Hospital personnel. Plans will be available soon.
| | Warning about Car Thieves | |
From the TPD Midtown Monthly Newsletter - July:
". . . . Another trend is also starting to emerge, targeting newer model GM trucks and large SUVs, Jeeps, and Ram trucks with a push-button start. Thieves are able to use a device that connects with the vehicle's computer through the OBD port (On-Board Diagnostics) and reprograms the vehicle to a new key.
There are "OBD port locks" to protect against this, but as the OBD port is generally under the dashboard, and not easily seen until after a thief has broken into the vehicle, a steering wheel lock, which can easily be seen from outside, remains a good deterrent to avoid not just theft, but also damage from attempted theft.
We would also like to remind people to remove all valuables, such as wallets, purses, and especially firearms, from their vehicles when they park. We are still seeing too many vehicle larcenies where these types of items are being stolen."
Two cars in Jefferson Park stolen this way....

First week in August, we were seeing some more street construction activity, but, alas, more water work in the form of valves and hydrants near north Vine. This should be the last of the prerequisite water works. Demo and grading expected to start on curbs, sidewalks, and ramps in mid-August. The schedule that I’m looking at now shows a complete date before Thanksgiving 2025.

| | RTA and Grant Rd Phases 5/6...complicated | | "Working out a solution: Local officials are considering a new plan for the Regional Transportation Authority’s $2.7 billion sales tax election, Tucson Sentinel columnist Blake Morlock writes. Time is running out to put the current plan on the ballot for early 2026, so new RTA Executive Director (and former Tucson city manager) Mike Ortega is pushing the idea of combining all the local transportation funds and putting them into a 20-year plan. Then officials would ask voters next year to continue the sales tax for 10 years." | | |
AND NOW OUT WITH THE OLD! JPNA met with AZ Arts Foundation and we are also in contact with Department of Transportation about the issue.
The old structure will be removed by the city. JP is currently awaiting the ciy's removal.
