Help Keep MAGA Out of Community Government
Last August, Stephanie Ganey Messinger was selling Trump merch at Jubilee Point Shopping Center in Daphne.
This summer, she’s among several extreme MAGA candidates challenging city council candidates on Baldwin County’s Eastern Shore. Messinger is one of two contenders running against Dem-backed Steve McArthur in District 3.
Josh Gammon is a Moms For Liberty-backed city council contender vying in Fairhope Council Place No. 2 for a seat held by Corey Martin, Fairhope’s first-ever councilman of color and a reliable ally against book censorship. Watch this space for more about Fairhope city elections next month.
Win Numbers Can Be a Win-Win
Municipal races are campaigns where turnout is the key. The customarily low number of voters in city elections opens the door to a stealth win. It’s a time when knowing your win number can shine a real glimmer of hope.
A word of warning to the math averse. We’re going to do some figuring, but the ciphering is simple. In Daphne, for example, the turnout in the last city election was only ten percent. So, if there are 4,000 voters in a district and ten percent go to the polls, that’s 400 voters. So to get a majority you need 200 voters plus 1. 201.
That doesn’t seem so hard, does it? It’s no more than most of us have in our contact lists.
A strong campaign where a candidate presses flesh with lots of voters who may not even know an election is coming up - and certainly don’t know the differences between candidates - can slip a win under the wire while much of the citizenry is blissfully unaware. It’s just a matter of getting 201 to the ballot box.
So it doesn’t take that many of us getting to the polls to keep MAGA voices from dominating our community life.
