Historical Tidbit:
Ousamequin Club

A movement for a women's club began in Bridgewater on April 4th, 1898, with the joining of town ladies and school teachers. This club would be called Ousamequin, with 91 charter members. The club's namesake came from Massasoit, who took the name after becoming the Chieftain of the Wampanoag Indians. He negotiated with the Pilgrims to purchase land that would later be known as Bridgewater. The Ousamequin Club would become a leading force in the community just like Ousamequin was a leader of his tribe.

The club's mission is to broaden and strengthen the moral, social and cultural life of its members and awaken in club women the realization of responsibility and opportunity in the field of education, legislation, and volunteer service and to develop an awareness of heritage and responsibility as American citizens.

The Ousamequin Club has supported and continues to support the following charities: Bridgewater 4th of July Committee, the American Heart Association, the Bridgewater Senior Center, the Veterans' Hospital, the Bridgewater Food Bank, Bridgewater's Literacy Program, the Sober Houses, Operation Santa, Hagashi School in Randolph, Heifer International Project, UNICEF, More Than Words, DECA, Music and Art Scholarships, Music Alley, Sunshine Farm Sanctuary, Project PACK, and other programs for women of sexual and domestic abuse, and three scholarships annually for graduating students who live in the Bridgewaters.

The club helped fund the beginnings of the Bridgewater VNA, creating a canteen from a donated building placed on the common from which sandwiches and pies were served to servicemen from all 48 states passing through town during WWII. Ousamequin Club was instrumental in establishing the Bridgewater Improvement Association.

The Ousamequin Club currently has meetings from October to May on the first Monday of the month at 1p at the Bridgewater Senior Center on Wally Krueger Way for a light lunch and program.

Starting Anew.

“Instead of saying, "I'm damaged, I'm broken, I have trust issues" say "I'm healing, I'm rediscovering myself, I'm starting over.”
~ Horacio Jones

“All great beginnings start in the dark, when the moon greets you to a new day...”
~ Shannon L. Alder

“So what do we do? Anything. Something. So long as we just don't sit there. If we screw it up, start over. Try something else. If we wait until we've satisfied all the uncertainties, it may be too late."
~ Lee Iacocca”

“The quiet regrowth of a forest,
fertilized only by its own burnt flesh,
is what I think of
when I think of survival.
When we are able to look death in the face
and prosper because of it, and not just despite it,
we prove that to live is to contradict.”
~ Belle Townsend
