BRA DAY USA
BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day USA is observed on the third Wednesday in October.
Each breast cancer campaign brings a special focus on an area of concern. However, few shine a light on options after mastectomy or lumpectomy like BRA Day USA. While reconstruction may not be for every woman, they should have access to the available options so they can make informed decisions.
Deciding whether to reconstruct breasts after a mastectomy is a personal decision. For some, the decision is a difficult one. It is important that patients are provided with all the information and tools to make the best decision for them. Remember, they've lived with their body, their breasts all their life. For many women, they've shaped the clothes they've worn, fed their children, and been a part of their more intimate life.
Women who chose to not have reconstruction performed also have choices. Prosthetic design and technology continually advance. Each woman should be provided with all their options. Her network should support her in every way through the journey and reassure her that whatever decision she makes is the right one for her.

NATIONAL LIQUEUR DAY
National Liqueur Day on October 16 annually celebrates the myriad classes and flavors of liqueur. Cheers!
The word liqueur comes from the Latin liquifacere, which means to liquefy. A liqueur is an alcoholic beverage made from a distilled spirit. Distillers flavor the spirit with fruit, cream, herbs, spices, flowers, or nuts. Next, they bottle it with added sugar or other sweeteners. While liqueurs are typically considerably sweet, distillers do not usually age their product long. They do, however, allow a resting period during production, which allows the flavors to marry.
With the broad selection of spirits available in seasonal, fragrant, and often curious flavors (vodkas and rums in particular), there is often confusion of liqueurs and liquors. In the United States and Canada, spirits are frequently called liquor. The most reliable rule of thumb to follow suggests that liqueurs comprise a sweeter, syrupy consistency, while liquors do not. Most liqueurs also have a lower alcohol content than spirits. However, some do contain as much as 55% ABV.
In parts of the United States, liqueurs may also be called cordials or schnapps.
Historically, liqueurs descend from herbal medicines prepared by monks in Italy as early as the 13th century. They steeped these often bitter herbs and sweetened them with sugar to make them more palatable to the monks' ailing patients. The curative's potency received a restful boost from its alcohol content as well.

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) is set to activate school zone flashing beacons at three additional locations starting Thursday, Oct. 17. This phased activation is part of the City’s commitment to ensuring school zones comply with state law and promote safety for students and drivers.
The DPW Sign Shop and Traffic Teams have been working diligently to bring school zones into compliance with Act No. 103, which mandates that school zone cameras operate only during specific times: one hour before and one hour after the beginning of the school day, and one hour before and one hour after the end of the school day. The City is currently reprogramming flashing beacons and updating signage at all school zones citywide.
The following school zone flashers will be activated as part of this phase:
- Westbound Opelousas Avenue at Oliver Street
- Westbound 9800 block of Hammond Street
- Eastbound 1400 block of Camp Street at International School
Motorists are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits in these zones during the designated times. Speeding violations in school zones will result in citations. Ensuring school zone safety remains a top priority for the City.
Residents can stay informed about active school zones, camera operations, and school zone hours by visiting https://nola.gov/get-school-zone-times. Any school zone citations issued outside the legal hours will be dismissed, and residents with questions about a ticket are encouraged to contact the Parking Adjudication Office at parkingadjudication@nola.gov for assistance.
DPW will continue to provide public updates as more school zone cameras are activated.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s! Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!
There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):
APPETIZERS
- Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75 (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)

- It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!

The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
- During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
- The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
- Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
- Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
- Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

Three ways to greet someone on Sukkot
🙌 Moadim L’simcha
😄 Chag Sameach
🎉 Gut Yontiff
Sukkot is a joyous holiday celebrating the fall harvest. The booths (called sukkahs) that Jews build during this week-long festival are reminiscent of the booths ancient farmers used to sleep right in their fields during harvest season. They also commemorate the 40 year period during which the Israelites wandered in the wilderness, sleeping in tents. Part of Sukkot is spent in synagogue at prayer, and much of it is spent eating, drinking, sleeping, and generally dwelling in the sukkah. But wherever you happen to meet people during this particularly joyous holiday, it’s nice to know how to greet then.
Here are some ways you can greet someone on Sukkot:
-
Moadim L’simcha (Moh-ah-DEEM Le-sim-CHAH) is used on both Sukkot and Passover, particularly the intermediate days of the festival. The traditional response is chagim u’zmanim l’sasson (khag-EEM oo-zmahn-EEM le-sah-SOWN).
- Chag Sameach (khahg sah-MAY-akh) literally means ‘happy holiday’ and applies to most Jewish holidays.
- Gut Yontiff (goot YUHN-tiff) is a yiddishized version of the Hebrew phrase yom tov meaning ‘good day’ and referring to any major holiday on which work is traditionally forbidden.

How to Wave the Lulav and Etrog on Sukkot
A guide to the Festival of Booth's four species, including their rituals and blessings.
By Richard Siegel
It is a positive commandment from the Torah [Leviticus 23:40] to gather together the Four Species during Sukkot:
On the first day you shall take the product of hadar trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before Adonai your God seven days.
“The first day” refers to the first day of Sukkot . “Fruit of goodly trees” refers to the etrog (citron). “Branches of palm trees” refers to the lulav . “Boughs of leafy trees” refers to the myrtle (hadasim). “Willows of the brook” refers to the aravot or hoshanot.
The four are often referred to under the inclusive term lulav, since the lulav is the largest and most prominent of the species. Thus, while the mitzvah is to wave the lulav, this actually refers to waving all four species: palm, willow, myrtle and etrog. Also, when people refer to the lulav and etrog, they are referring to all four species, including the willow and myrtle.
How the Four Fit Together
The lulav is a single palm branch and occupies the central position in the grouping. It comes with a holder-like contraption (made from its own leaves) which has two extensions. With the backbone (the solid spine) of the lulav facing you and this holder in place near the bottom, two willow branches are placed in the left extension and three myrtle branches are placed in the right. The myrtle should extend to a greater height than the willows.

This whole cluster is held in the right hand, the etrog is held in the left, and the two should be touching one another. Some have the custom of picking up the etrog first and then the lulav — reversing the order when putting them down–because the etrog is referred to before the others in the biblical verse.
Waving the Lulav
It is a mitzvah to wave the lulav on each of the first seven days of Sukkot. The proper time is in the morning — either before the morning service or during the service immediately before the Hallel. A meditation (found in the Siddur, or prayer book) is recited prior to the blessing (this has many kabbalistic secrets concealed within it).
Blessing for Waving the Lulav
Read the Hebrew text of the blessing on Sefaria.
“Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and has commanded us concerning the waving of the lulav.”
Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha’olam asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al netilat lulav.
On the first day of waving add:
“Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has granted us life, sustenance, and permitted us to reach this season.”
Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha’olam shehehiyanu v’kiyemanu v’higiyanu lazman hazeh.
After the Blessing
Before the blessing, the etrog is held with its pitom (stemlike protrusion) pointed downward. After the blessing, it is inverted so that the pitom faces up. At this point you wave/shake the lulav (together with the other three) in the following manner:
1. Stand facing east.
2. Hold the lulav out to the east (in front of you) and shake it three times. Each time the motion of shaking should be a drawing in to you–reach and draw in, reach out and draw in, reach out and draw in.
3. Repeat the same motion three times to your right (south), behind over your shoulder (west), to your left (north), raising it up above you, lowering it down below you.
4. All of these should be done slowly and deliberately–concentrating on the symbolisms and intentions of the act. The lulav is also waved during Hallel while saying: “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His lovingkindness endures forever.”
Hodu – shake front [East]
L’Adonai – [never shake when saying God’s name]
Ki – shake right [South]
Tov – shake back [West]
Ki – shake left [North]
Le-olam – shake up
Chasdo – shake down
This verse occurs twice during Hallel.
The lulav is again waved while saying: “Let Israel say that His lovingkindness endures forever.”
Yomar – shake front [East]
Na – shake right [South]
Yisrael – shake back [West]
Ki – shake left [North]
Le-olam – shake up
Chasdo – shake down
And it is waved again while saying: “We implore You, Lord, save us.”
A-na – [Shake front/East on first syllable, shake right/South on second syllable]
Adonai – [never shake when saying God’s name]
Ho-shi-ah [Shake back/West first syllable, shake left/North second syllable, shake up last syllable]
Na – shake down
The lulav and etrog are traditionally not waved on Shabbat because bringing these items to the synagogue would violate the prohibition against carrying. Some liberal synagogues do wave the lulav and etrog on Shabbat. While it is customary for each individual to have a lulav and etrog, many synagogues leave some sets in the synagogue sukkah for the use of their members. The lulav and etrog may also be waved at home.

Zombie Paintball Returns to NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale
07:00 October 04, 2024
By: Charles Andre Blanchard
Celebrate the Spooky Season
Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).
Festivities
This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.
Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.
NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Pricing & Packages
General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.
For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.
Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.
For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.
Hours & Dates of Operation
The attraction will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days:
- Oct. 10 - 12

"Help" serves as the modern equivalent of the word "succor," embodying the essence of assistance and support in times of need. While "succor" often evokes a sense of urgent relief or comfort, "help" has evolved to encompass a broader spectrum of aid, whether emotional, physical, or practical. In contemporary language, "help" reflects the collective responsibility we share in uplifting one another, whether through small acts of kindness or significant interventions. This simple, yet powerful term resonates across cultures, emphasizing the importance of compassion and cooperation in fostering community and resilience in the face of challenges.

Officer Marcus Moscowicz is a small town policeman with dreams of making it to detective. One fateful night, shots ring out at the surprise birthday party of Great American Novelist Arthur Whitney and the writer is killed…fatally. With the nearest detective an hour away, Marcus jumps at the chance to prove his sleuthing skills – with the help of his silent partner, Lou. But whodunit? Did Dahlia Whitney, Arthur’s scene-stealing wife, give him a big finish? Is Barrette Lewis, the prima ballerina, the prime suspect? Did Dr. Griff, the overly-friendly psychiatrist, make a frenemy? Marcus only has a short amount of time to find the killer and make his name before the real detective arrives…and the ice cream melts!

NATIONAL BOSS’S DAY
On October 16, National Boss's Day, also known as National Boss Day or Bosses Day, recognizes the hardworking boss overseeing the workplace. Employees across the United States show appreciation and thankfulness to their bosses. They remember their boss's kindness and fairness throughout the year, too. (If the 16th of October falls on a weekend, then this day is celebrated on the closest working day.)
Many leaders carry heavy loads. They oversee many employees and guide their careers, too. While their position holds them responsible for a department, business, or organization and leading it to success, their list of responsibilities is multifaceted.
Some bosses have bosses themselves. Depending on the size of an organization, those bosses also answer to someone else. In fact, everyone has a boss of some kind. If your boss is the owner, they still answer to the taxman, the customers, and their merchants. Keeping a business running smoothly with outstanding employees requires balance. These bosses know how to put their best employees forward and lead with the confidence that we look up to.

HEY! OVER HERE!
SOS! 10 Ways To Cry For Help That Are Worth Knowing
Published on October 17, 2024
Credit: nikko macaspac
While we sincerely hope that you never find yourself in a situation where you might need to cry for help, it is essential to know how to do it properly. This knowledge is not only just for oneself but also to recognize a distress signal coming from others. Scroll down to learn the meaning of ten signals, from the world-famous S.O.S. to more specific ways to call for help.
1S.O.S.
Credit: Jp Valery
We will start with the most universally recognized distress signal, typically transmitted via Morse code in a sequence of three dots, followed by three dashes, and then followed by another three dots (· · · − − − · · ·).
Many people believe that S.O.S. stands for "Save Our Souls" or "Save Our Ship", but in reality, these letters don’t stand for anything. The reason for this combination of letters lies in the fact that it is easily recognizable, it can be repeated continually and no other command uses it.
2Mayday
Credit: Pasqualino Capobianco
Another easily recognizable distress signal, thanks in no small part to movies and television, is Mayday. The term was invented in 1923 when England and France needed to agree on a good distress signal that could be easily understood by everyone.
S.O.S. was already in use, but that signal could not be adopted because the letter 'S' was hard to distinguish over the telephone, especially in a chaotic emergency situation. Enter May-day, which is the phonetic equivalent of "M'aidez", the French for "Help me."
3Pan-Pan
Credit: Kent Pilcher
Pan-Pan calls (pronounced "pahn-pahn") are used for urgent situations that are not life-threatening. When someone aboard a boat, ship, aircraft, or other vehicle uses this signal, they are conveying that they need help and that the situation is urgent, but for the time being, does not pose an immediate danger to anyone's life or to the vessel itself.
Radioing "pan-pan" informs potential rescuers that an urgent problem exists, whereas "mayday" calls indicate that all other activities should be dropped to immediately begin a rescue. To declare pan-pan correctly, the caller repeats it three times: "Pan-pan, pan-pan, pan-pan."
4Sécurité
Credit: James Peacock
Not all alert calls are emitted by the person or vessel in need of rescue. Sécurité (often repeated three times, "Sécurité, sécurité, sécurité") is a procedure term used in the maritime radio service that warns the crew that the following message contains important safety information.
This warning is commonly used by coast radio stations before the broadcast of navigational warnings and meteorological information.
5Mayday Relay
Credit: Patrick Tomasso
Yet another example of an alert signal that is not emitted by the vessel in distress, is the Mayday Relay. This call is issued by a third party on behalf of another vessel or aircraft that is unable to do so.
Mayday Relays are typically issued to the Coast Guard or any other authority with jurisdiction over the area, to notify them of the situation taking place.
6Break, Break, Break
Credit: Studio_iris
In radio terminology, "Break, Break, Break" is the expression used when interrupting in the middle of a non-distress communication because you have an emergency.
This expression serves as a way of saying, "Sorry to interrupt your conversation but there is an emergency going on and I need your help".
7Mayday Relay Relay
Credit: Trinity Moss
The communication Mayday Relay Relay is used when relaying a Mayday message to a second vessel or station if the initial relay has not been successful and needs to be re-transmitted.
Sometimes, the distances that need to be reached are too far, or weather conditions complicate the relay. In these situations, a Mayday Relay Relay may be used by a vessel requesting assistance for a third party in distress.
8International Code Of Distress Flags
Credit: Matteo Miliddi
While the use of flags as a means of communication on ships was more common back in the day, when radio communications were not available, some major flag signals still need to be known by those responsible for sailing a vessel.
The most urgent code for help is the "N" flag arranged over the "C" flag, which is used to communicate the International Code Signal of distress.
9CQD
Credit: Chinh Le Duc
A signal that was used before S.O.S. was adopted universally, CQD originated from the signal CQ, which expressed "seeking you," or "all stations." The signal CQ was commonly used among wireless operators as a time-saving means of addressing all stations with a single signal.
The ability of CQ to convey distress was eventually diminished by frequent use. Therefore, in 1904, Guglielmo Marconi's wireless company announced the distress signal CQD would be used, signifying "Seeking you. Distress!".
10Signal Mirror
Credit: Jerzy Gorecki
An ancient device like a signaling mirror has saved innumerable lives and continues to be an invaluable resource in emergencies all over the world.
To use a signaling mirror, hold it in your hand and slowly bring the mirror up to your eye while making sure that the reflective surface is not obscured by your hat or fingers. Then, tilt the mirror up toward the sun, until you see a small bead of light. Once you've found the bead of light, move it toward your intended target (be it a plane or searcher), and keep the bead of light in view as you do this. Move the mirror in such a way that the target understands that you are voluntarily trying to contact them.

Saenger Theatre - New Orleans
The Saenger Theatre opened on February 4, 1927.
The 4,000-seat theatre took three years to build and cost $2.5 million.
Its opening prompted thousands to parade along Canal Street.
The top ticket price was 65 cents, and the bill for each performance included a silent movie and stage play (produced by the Paramount-Publix Corporation), and music from the Saenger Grand Orchestra.
Architect Emile Weil designed the interior of an atmospheric theatre to recall an Italian Baroque courtyard.
Weil installed 150 lights in the ceiling of the theatre, arranged in the shape of constellations of the night sky.
The theatre also employed special effects machines to project images of moving clouds, sunrises, and sunsets across the theatre's interior.
In 1929, Julian Saenger sold the theatre for $10 million to Paramount Publix, which continued to operate the theatre successfully throughout the Great Depression.
In 1933 Paramount Publix converted the theatre to "talking pictures".

Let’s Do Brunch
A well-dressed woman stands on the corner of Decatur and Madison Streets near the entrance for Begue's Exchange and Madame Begue's restaurant circa 1903. It is quite unusual that the street seems so deserted at any time of the day. You will recall that Madame Begue's restaurant was known for serving one meal daily -- the Butcher's Breakfast, sometimes called the Bohemian breakfast because it was only served starting at 11am. We know it today as brunch.

Shake Your Hips: Louisiana Blues (Exhibit Opening)
- Friday, October 18, 2024
- 6:00 PM 8:00 PM
- New Orleans Jazz Museum
- 400 Esplanade Ave.New OrleansUnited States
Please join us at The New Orleans Jazz Museum on Friday, October 18th to celebrate the opening of the new exhibit Shake Your Hips: Louisiana Blues, on the second floor at the New Orleans Jazz Museum from 6-8 PM.
Exhibit Overview:
Although Louisiana is most known musically for Cajun, zydeco, and, of course, jazz, its rich blues tradition often goes unnoticed, or worse, is ignored. Shake Your Hips: Louisiana Blues is the first comprehensive museum exhibit that tells the complex story of Louisiana blues and sets it in the larger context of the American music tradition.
The many forms of Louisiana blues have been shaped by and reflect the state’s geography, history, and regional differences in culture. Blues from New Orleans has been and continues to be influenced by the city’s ultra rich jazz scene, while blues from southwest Louisiana gains influence from both zydeco and Cajun music styles. And Baton Rouge is one of the unsung American centers for blues music.
Shake Your Hips: Louisiana Blues includes never-before-seen artifacts, multi-media displays and new interviews with Louisiana blues greats, in the process finally giving due to another great Louisiana music tradition.

About NOLA Funk Fest
NOLA Funk Fest is the coming out party for The Louisiana Music & Heritage Experience, a museum of grand scale dedicated to the preservation of Louisiana’s rich musical history. This festival features programming giving attendees a taste of what the museum will offer. The 2023 festival featured an exhibit titled I Found My Thrill: The Music and Artistry of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, which continues its run at the New Orleans Jazz Museum through September before embarking on a state-wide tour. At NOLA Funk Fest 2024, a new exhibit on Louisiana Blues will make its debut at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Festival programming also includes two symposiums where oral histories, flavored by musical performances, will highlight the evolution of Blues and Jazz into R&B, Rock and Roll, and Funk. In 2023, our symposiums focused on Earl King and Dave Bartholomew. Stay tuned for details about our 2024 symposiums, which can only be accessed through our Super VIP ticket package.
To top off the programming, the city and nation's best funk acts perform for three days across two stages. NOLA Funk Fest 2023 was headlined by Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Leo Nocentelli with Experiencing The Meters and including Grammy icons Irma Thomas, George Porter Jr. and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
Our goal for this festival is to draw attention and help make our dream of giving Louisiana the museum it deserves a reality. Our goal for the museum is to preserve the evolving Louisiana music history to educate, inspire and empower.

Rougarou Fest Queen Embodies Louisiana Fifolet
The Rougarou Fest is proud to announce Mrs. Courtney Bennett will reign as the 2024 Rougarou Queen.
A native of Morgan City, and a resident of Houma since 1984, Courtney has been active and involved in gymnastics, cheering, dancing, and numerous music and art events in our community. She is the mother of two awesome children, Gavin, age 13, and Laurel, age 6. She has been married for 18 years to the love of her life, Garrett Bennett.
Courtney graduated from Nicholls State University with a degree in early childhood education. With that education and her creative passion, she spent many years working with children at the preschool at her church, with events at SOLA – a local children’s theatre, and as a dancer and instructor at Paddy Danos School of Dance. Because of her realization of her love of makeup and theater, she followed her creative dream and enrolled in cosmetology! Today she’s a hairstylist at Ambiance Salon in Houma.
Continuing her dreams of designing hair and make-up and ALWAYS a fan of dress up and costuming, she became involved in Rougarou Fest with Jonathan Foret. She has been a Rougarou witch for many years dancing the streets with her sister, Megan, and her fellow hairstylist and friend, Danae. She admits that the hours they spent doing witch make-up and costumes are just as fun as the parade. The first time she saw the Rougarou parade, she knew she had to be a part of it. It’s with her fellow witchy sisters, that she haunts the streets of Houma with their German witch dance.
She is very excited and appreciative to be able to take on this creative project and represent the festival as the 2024 Rougarou Queen. She looks forward to working with her longtime friend, Jonathan Foret, and his committee and volunteers. She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy everything the festival represents and has to offer!
Her costume is inspired by the story of the fifolet. In Louisiana folklore, the "fifolet" is a supernatural creature closely related to the "will-o'-the-wisp" found in other cultures. The fifolet is believed to be a type of mischievous spirit or fairy that appears as a glowing light, often seen floating over marshes, swamps, or other eerie, dark places.
Much like the will-o'-the-wisp, the fifolet is said to lead people astray, drawing them into dangerous or confusing situations. It’s often described as a trickster that lures travelers off their paths, playing with their sense of direction and perception. In some tales, encountering a fifolet might mean you're about to face some misfortune or get lost. The lore around fifolets reflects the rich tapestry of Cajun and Creole folklore, blending elements of European, African, and Native American traditions to create unique and localized myths.
The queen would like to thank her hair stylist and makeup artist, Dustin McElroy, and all the stylists at Ambiance Salon for helping make this possible. She would also like to thank Kathy Marmillion for creating her "Rougarou Queen" sash and the staff at Chez Lili Bridal for all of their hard work and support. She appreciates Dristy Foret Photography for beautifully capturing all of the hard work and talent that went into creating the fifolet-inspired queen. Most importantly, she would like to thank her husband and kids, along with all of her family and friends, for their love and support during the preparation to be the Rougarou Queen. And lastly, she thanks Jonathan Foret and the Rougarou Fest for the opportunity!
The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural activities, children’s activities, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.
Each year a Rougarou Queen is selected to represent the festival at various events throughout the region. The queen is selected from our large team of volunteers by a committee of festival organizers. This ensures that our queen is aware of the details of our festival since she has been a part of bringing our event to life in previous years.
The Rougarou Queen will reign over the parade at 7PM Saturday, October 19, 2024.

"The Sweet Potato Fest is not just about food—it's about fostering community spirit and showcasing the talents of our students and local chefs."
The Sweet Potato Fest gives students and families the chance to connect with nature and the cycle of the seasons by getting hands-on in the garden. It’s a day to honor local farmers, celebrate culinary traditions, and open conversations about sustainable agriculture — all while enjoying a fun, healthy day outdoors. Above all, it’s about the simple joy of digging into the earth, sharing good food, and building a stronger community.
The event is free and open to the public, so gather your friends and family for a day filled with unforgettable memories. Whether you're tasting innovative sweet potato dishes, cheering on parade participants, or simply enjoying the festive atmosphere, Sweet Potato Fest 2024 is not to be missed!

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, October 21
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.
