Best Historic Small Town - USA TODAY (2024)
Abilene to Participate in Love, Kansas Campaign
Abilene, Kansas, has been chosen as one of fifty communities across the state to participate in the Kansas Department of Commerce’s national campaign aimed at attracting and retaining talent. This collaborative effort involves the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, the Dickinson County Economic Development Corporation, and other community partners.

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “It’s simple: We need more people in Kansas to keep up with the phenomenal economic growth our state is experiencing. The best way to do that is to first approach Kansans who left the state for economic opportunities elsewhere and invite them to build a life in a place they know and have connections to, whether in their hometown or elsewhere in the state. With the Love, Kansas campaign, we aren’t just extending an invitation to those who once called Kansas home to come back – we’re also inviting families from around the country to build their lives in the Sunflower State.”

As part of the campaign, Abilene will partner with the Central Kansas Free Fair and Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo from July 30 to August 2 to promote the Love, Abilene initiative. This will include distributing Love, Kansas hand fans with an invitation to return home and showcasing the Love, Kansas video nightly at the rodeo.

Julie Roller Weeks, Director of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, shared, “As part of this project, we must host an event in the first sixty days. Fair week in Abilene is an unofficial homecoming for former residents, so it makes sense to roll out this campaign during the fair. We want to thank them not only for visiting but also to invite them to consider making Abilene their home once again.”

In addition to these efforts, a letter-writing campaign will be launched to invite former residents to return home. Roller Weeks shared her personal experience, stating, “I’m a Dickinson County boomerang – I left for school and jobs but returned home eight years ago. The support I’ve received since returning is incredible, and I hope to support other boomerangs by extending the invitation to return.”

Alongside the Kansas Department of Commerce’s LoveKansas.com website, a new local website, LoveAbilene.com, is available to showcase opportunities for housing, careers, education, and the Community Foundation of Dickinson County’s Dorothy Barber Welcome Home Scholarship.
“We hope this campaign will continue to grow and expand county-wide,” Roller Weeks added. “Attracting more people to live and work in Dickinson County is good for everyone.”

Abilene to Kick Off America's 250th with New Mural
While communities nationwide are brainstorming ideas to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, Abilene is kicking off the effort by creating Kansas’ first America 250 mural.

The Abilene Celebrates America 250 Mural Project aims to honor America's founding and military history while fostering civic pride. Located on a prominent wall above VFW Post #3279, overlooking Little Ike Park in historic downtown Abilene, the mural is set to become a destination as the country prepares to celebrate in 2026.

The mural is a collaborative effort between the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, Abilene VFW Post #3279, Abilene Chapter NSDAR, NSDAR America 250! Celebration Grant, and the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“The Community Foundation of Dickinson County is proud to support this effort to bring more art to Abilene and celebrate our country’s founding,” said Elizabeth Weese, Community Foundation of Dickinson County director.

The mural will be painted by Mindy Allen of Mindy's Murals, the same artist slated to complete the Eisenhower Foundation’s mural on the Bert & Wetta silo this fall.

“The VFW is excited to add a mural to its building,” said Bill Marshall, VFW post member. “The mural will feature all of the military branches and the Betsy Ross flag signifying the 13 original colonies.”
According to Allen, work is scheduled to begin next week.

“DAR is a women's service organization dedicated honoring the patriots of the Revolutionary War,” said Dee Marshall, Abilene Chapter NSDAR Regent. “We hope this project is the first of many that will showcase our patriotism and promote Abilene as a Best Historic Small Town.”

Oktoberfest Dinner Train
“Ich Liebe Oktoberfest!” (I love Oktoberfest!) Celebrate Oktoberfest on the Smoky Valley Limited!
Oktoberfest originally began in Bavaria, Germany, as an agricultural exhibition much like our modern-day county fairs in Kansas. Heavily promoted by brewing companies, the holiday grew across Germany, and of course, found its way to the United States. Today, Oktoberfest is celebrated in so many communities across Kansas, thanks to the heavy German settlement in so many regions of the state. On Saturday, September 28, join us on the A&SV’s Smoky Valley Limited for our annual salute to Oktoberfest. Schatzi’s Schnitzel Haus of Riley is serving a classic German meal with your choice of schnitzel (breaded pork chop) or German beef goulash, with German sauerkraut with bacon, semmelknodel (bread dumplings) with mushroom sauce, and for dessert, homemade apfelstrudel (apple strudel). Iced tea and water accompany the meal. And it wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without German beer, and Chef Manfred is serving Paulaner beer directly from Munich! German music, German food, and lots of fun on a two-hour train ride through the Smoky Hill River Valley on a beautiful fall evening. Our train leaves our 1887 Rock Island Depot at 6:00 p.m.

Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings is a brand new show that offers the best of Forever Plaid, tied up in a nifty package with a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with Christmas standards that have all been "Plaid-erized," our boys are back to do their Christmas Special.

Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites, like their riotous three-minute-and-eleven-second version of The Ed Sullivan Show – this time, featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir, as well as a Plaid Caribbean Christmas that puts the "Day-O" in Excelsis!

This truly "heaven-sent" holiday treat will lift audiences' spirits and fill them with nostalgia for a bygone era of classic music sung in perfect harmony.
