This was the focus question we explored at the 02027 Long Now of Education (LNE02026) convening hosted by equity designer and educator David H. Clifford at the Collaboratory at Head-Royce School in Oakland, California.
Launched in 2024, the Long Now of Education is an emerging movement for transformation and a source of optimism for HFLI, which is one of its stewards. The overarching purpose is to catalyze transformative, not incremental, human-centered change in education. Convenings are co-designed to prioritize the participant experience, dignity, and action.
Over two days this summer, twenty-four people brought together diverse lived experiences, generations, fields, and forms of expertise. We gathered to meet with intimacy, curiosity, courage, and care to explore this question together and work in groups to develop a specific practice they are willing to try, fail at, and revise.
In a guest blog, Jason Swanson -- Senior Director of Strategic Foresight at KnowledgeWorks -- shared his insights about his experience in Oakland:
"Education is tasked with preparing learners for a future that no one can fully predict. That tension raises an important question: if the future is unknowable, why spend time thinking about it? For communities like the Long Now of Education, futures thinking is not about predicting what comes next; it’s about expanding what we believe is possible."

Now, the BIG news: LNE 02027 will expand to three U.S. sites! To learn more about the Long Now of Education or inquire about joining us in 2027, reach out to Deborah Parizek or Tom Thorpe, who are eager to talk with potential new collaborators.
