Is AI Weakening Your Team?

One of the most discussed topics in the industry remains AI. In a recent Harvard Business Review article, Professor Jeffrey Hancock and his team reported their research on Why Team Dynamics Weaken When Employees Turn to AI instead of Their Colleagues.

Their research found that part of what makes a great team work is knowing and trusting who has which skills or knowledge and knowing whom to go to for what. The study also found that while AI use increased the sense that teammates had specialized and unique knowledge, treating AI as a teammate also eroded teammates’ trust in each other and their ability to coordinate.

This practice of displacing teammates with AI can lead to “relationslipping”—the weakening of a team’s working relationships as members substitute AI for one another.

There are two ways this happens. First, when team members skip conversations for a quick AI answer, they don’t develop or update their mental map of who knows what. Second, when colleagues offload work to AI, their thinking becomes harder to see, so the map loses accuracy.

So, what should you do as a leader?

  1. Increase communication with new norms and aligned incentives.
  2. Use AI to prepare for conversations instead of replacing them.

AI will never replace the insights you gain from reading American Recruiters Global Foodservice News. It is a must-read for real industry intelligence; enjoy our latest edition.

Until next time, please exercise your freedom to vote on November 3, 2026.
