Capital Campaign Updates
The Cathy Romano Health Centre
|
The Cathy Romano Health Centre can be a busy place. Itchy poison ivy infections, swollen sprained ankles, home-sickness, and sun burns are all symptoms that tell us Summer Camp is in full gear!
The Nursing Staff are wonderful, monitoring and tending to hundreds of kids of all ages, and a myriad of counsellors.
After decades of use it has become apparent that
this old cabin turned Health Centre needs to be replaced
. It is not accessible, it is cramped, it sits on piers and is energy inefficient. Work has already begun to design and construct a
Zero Building
, which translated means zero net energy use; zero carbon footprint; zero toxins; and zero construction waste. This supports our goal of becoming recognized as a national environmental education leadership centre, showcasing to the region, province, country and world what innovative green buildings can look like.
The redesigned Health Centre will not only accommodate the health needs of campers and staff but it will show how people and nature can occupy the same space so that both can thrive.
It’s a fantastic project with lots of opportunity to teach children, youth and adults about sustainable building practices.

Camp Kawartha will turn
100 in 2021
and we are already preparing to celebrate this milestone anniversary with events, workshops and get-togethers.
Recently, we had the very great pleasure of interviewing and filming one of our oldest campers, Mr. Jack Brownscombe. Jack attended Camp Kawartha in the late 1930’s/early 1940’s when it was known as Rotary Camp. Jack describes how his older brother, who was also attending Camp Kawartha, swam across the Lake to run some errands in town.
We have discovered an abundance of old photographs thanks to Jon Oldham, Archivist at the Peterborough Museum & Archives. The photos are being digitized and will be shared with us so we can build our own archive.
If you have some photos, memories, or memorabilia of Camp Kawartha from the past that you would like to share, please contact Susan – philanthropy@campkawartha.ca .

Mapping an Understanding of Kawartha Lakes Geography & History
|
Recently, we asked local artist and musician, Michael Ketemer, to produce a large, interactive canvas map of the Kawartha Lakes for our Outdoor Education and Summer Camp programming.
He created this impressive map that will allow participants to literally walk through the geography of this region. We look forward to using this map to explore the rich history of the Anishinaabe of the Kawarthas and to explore reconciliation and social justice for First Nations.

A Picture-Perfect Partnership with Trent University
|
Camp Kawartha Staff are very pleased to be working with Adrian Franceschinis, a Media Studies student from Trent University in his fourth year.
As part of his multi-month internship with us, Adrian is tasked with creating 1-minute, 3-minute, and 10-minute videos for our Outdoor Education Department. The videos will able to illustrate what outdoor education at Camp Kawartha offers to teachers, students, and parents. Adrian brings lots of talent and experience to the role, and worked most recently with the MTO where he shot and edited internal communications videos for the Ministry.
We would like to acknowledge the support of the Trent University Media Studies Program and the Trent Community Research Centre for helping us connect with Adrian.

T
his month Chef Tina has some advice about those upcoming Christmas and holiday parties!
"
My husband and I have some good friends that we get together with regularly for an appetizer and cocktail competition night. I made this appetizer and it was a huge hit! In fact it was considered to be the best overall appetizer of the evening!!"
