I am often asked, "Rob, why do you love the Holiday Season (or in my family, Christmas) so very much?" I usually laugh and say something like “What gave it away? How I start to wear Christmas sweatshirts, or even t-shirts, on October 1st? Or how I leave my real Christmas tree up well into February, and then replace it with a year-round tree?"

The real answer to why I love Christmas so very much is both personal and universal. The personal part began with my mother. Mom was like a little red-headed North Pole Elf at Christmas. Whether it was going on an adventure to get the tree, decorating the house, baking cookies, or going window shopping, Christmas was magic to my family.

Later, once Mary and I started our life together and brought Kiri into the world, we added our own traditions to my mom’s (who happened to live just a couple of miles away). This very night, I lay in my bed looking at the decorations in our main room. So many decorations. Each with a memory. A representation of the incredible love our family has had and continues to have for one another.

As for the universal part, my love for Christmas and the Holiday Season is simple. It’s that time of year when kindness reigns supreme. As the great poet Maya Angelou so eloquently put it, “Christmas time is a halting of hate time.” It is simply the time of year when Love and Peace actually seem to take priority in our frenetic lives. Even in World War I (Christmas 1914 to be precise) there was a halting of fighting, and in its place, the exchanging of gifts between combatants. Even a soccer match broke out in one location!

Of course, last but not least, there is the music. Music which lifts the soul to the Heavens, and tells humble stories that express faith traditions the world over. I have dedicated my career to great music, and no music means more to me than the music of Christmastide.

And so, it is music in this tradition which we look forward to sharing with you at our Celtic and Classical Christmas concert on Saturday, December 13th and our Yuletide Madrigal Feast on Monday, December 15th. Please come join us as we sing and play music for this special season of Love and Peace.
