WHO WAS CRAZY HORSE
Crazy Horse was a Oglala Lakota warrior and leader who fought to preserve Native American lands and culture during the 19th century.
To honor his place in American history he is memorialized in the world's largest mountain carving, far larger than Mount Rushmore with its four presidents. Picture this. When finished all four president heads of Mount Rushmore could fit within the horse's head and neck area.
The completed sculpture will show Crazy Horse mounted on a horse and pointing into the distance toward the lands where his dead are buried..
After more than 75 years, the monument remains unfinished. The face of Crazy Horse was dedicated in 1998, but work continues on the horse and surrounding features.
The memorial attracts more than one million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited attractions in the Black Hills region.
