Evensong

5 pm, In the Cathedral

This afternoon, we welcome back to the podium James Buonemani, former and longtime Director of Music at St. James in-the-City, Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles.

Today’s Introit is by Tomás Luis de Victoria, the most prominent Spanish composer of the late Renaissance. He is to his native land as Palestrina is to Italy: paragons of refined musicianship and masters of flowing counterpoint, they are best known for their copious mass settings and motets for the Church Year.

Having grown up as a chorister at Wakefield Cathedral, in Yorkshire, Kenneth Leighton retained a strong interest in church music throughout his career, though his life’s work was focused largely on education and on composition across a broad spectrum of genres. His music has an unmistakable flavor, characterized by non-triadic harmony and a preference for stacked fourths over thirds. The resulting grittiness lends itself well, in my opinion, to Isaac Watts’ hymn text, “Give me the wings of faith,” suggesting less a sentimental attachment to the saints than a realistic portrayal of the sacrifices endured in striving for sainthood.

Herbert Howells, small-town boy from an impoverished family living in an English town near the Welsh border, became the prince of 20th century Anglican church music. In his prodigious outpouring of canticles, anthems and mass settings, he proved himself to be a worthy successor to Byrd, Purcell, Wesley and Vaughan Williams, Howells' mentor. Today’s canticle setting, Collegium Regale, was written for the famous choir of King’s College, Cambridge – the very choir that first brought this setting to light in a seminal recording under its then-director David Willcocks.

Election Eve Prayer Service

Monday, November 2, 6 pm, Virtual Meeting

On the eve of Election Day, Bishop Susan Brown Snook and leaders from across the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego invite you to gather online for a service of prayer on Monday, November 2.

In a season when public life can feel anxious, divided, and uncertain, the Church is called to something deeper than partisanship: to remember who we are in Christ. Together, we will pray for our country, for those who lead and serve, for the poor and vulnerable, for peace among nations, for the human family, and for wisdom in the days ahead.

This service is an invitation to place our hopes, fears, and responsibilities before God and to renew our commitment to seek and serve Christ in one another. Whatever the days ahead may bring, we gather as one body, trusting that our deepest allegiance is to the way of Jesus and that our common life is shaped by prayer, mercy, justice, and love. Join us online at for this diocesan Election Eve Prayer Service (Click Here).

Announcements

Chapter Nominations Are Now Open!

Have you ever wondered how St. Paul’s operates behind the scenes? Where does your pledge go, and how are those funds allocated? Have you wondered how you can help choose the next Dean, even if you are not serving on the Search Committee? Or why the service bulletin acknowledges the Kumeyaay Nation each Sunday?

If these questions interest you, consider serving on Chapter, the Cathedral’s governing body. Each year, four members of the congregation are elected to serve three-year terms, helping guide the life and ministry of the Cathedral.

If you feel like you are called to a leadership ministry within the Church, Chapter may be the right fit for you. The Nominating Committee is now accepting both self-nominations and nominations of others through Friday, December 4, 2026.

To learn more about Chapter and its responsibilities, visit the Chapter webpage. You can nominate yourself or someone else using the form at the bottom of the Chapter webpage. For those nominated, we ask that you additionally fill out the Biography and Statement form so we can get to know you.

For questions you may also contact Allen Mutchler, chair of the Nominating Committee (almutc9284@outlook.com), or Mark Lester, Dean’s Warden (mlestersd@sbcglobal.net).

We recommend canned fish or meat, nut butters, protein bars, canned beans/veggies/fruit/soup, whole grain crackers, etc. Items will be taken to a food bank at St. Mark's. Please check with Diane if you wish to contribute something that isn't listed above. (dianelopezhughes@me.com).
