Jon Alexander
Born in 1947 and raised on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Jon Alexander grew up in a highly cultured household, the son of a poet and a pianist-composer. Though he studied music and performed at Carnegie Hall as a teenager, he ultimately chose science as his profession, keeping music as a lifelong passion.
He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1964 and earned a B.A. in Biology from Harvard, where he hosted a jazz radio show and rowed on the lightweight crew team—two communities that remain important to him today.
After a year working with underprivileged children in New York City, Jon entered Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by a residency at Yale New Haven Medical Center. Motivated in part by his father’s heart attack, he specialized in cardiology, completing a fellowship at Yale.
Jon spent 48 years at Danbury Hospital, where he became its first full-time staff cardiologist and helped build a leading tertiary-care cardiology program. He played a key role in introducing new procedures, expanding clinical capabilities, and establishing training and rehabilitation programs, while remaining deeply committed to teaching.
He also founded the Connecticut chapter of the American College of Cardiology and continues to serve on its Education Committee.
Widowed in 2000, Jon remarried in 2002 and now lives in Westport. Father of five including two step children, and grandfather of five, he enjoys travel, tennis, music, and New York’s cultural life, and looks forward to an active and engaged retirement.
