Don’t Be Duped by a Dubious Door-To-Door Solicitor
The holidays are a time for spreading good cheer and kindness to all. There are some, however, who may take advantage of the kindness offered by others and seek to profit for themselves. Though many door-to-door solicitors are hardworking and honest, others may pose as such to accomplish their own agenda. Here are some tips to help in identifying legitimate solicitation:
- It is illegal to conduct door-to-door solicitation in Los Altos without first obtaining a permit from the City.
- A peddler or solicitor who obtains a permit is only permitted to conduct sales between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday - Saturday.
- If a permit is issued by the City, it must be in the possession of the solicitor when conducting solicitation within Los Altos. You may request to see the permit and are encouraged to do so if you are unsure about the authenticity of the solicitation.
- No solicitor shall attempt to solicit at a residential location where the owner has properly posted signs prohibiting solicitation. Refer to the Los Altos Municipal Code section 4.24 for specific requirements.
- A peddler or solicitor who offers goods or services with an asking price of less than $10 is exempt from the City’s requirement to obtain a permit.
Residents who observe suspicious activity or are in doubt as to the legitimacy of a door-to-door solicitation are encouraged to contact the Los Altos Police Department at (650) 947-2770.

The City is scheduled to perform various street treatments as part of its Annual Street Resurfacing Project, which aims to repair and maintain the asphalt pavement in the City. This week, the City’s contractor completed work on the following streets:
- Don Kirk Street
- Marlborough Court
- Braddle Avenue
- Bellwood Court
- Altos Oaks Drive
For the rest of this week and the week of December 17, weather permitting, the contractor plans to complete asphalt pavement repairs on Granger Avenue (St. Joseph Avenue to approximately Permanente Creek) and Sandalwood Lane.
