Director's Dispatch

Early morning mist shrouded the library last Saturday morning as our lawn blossomed with the energy of the Friends of the Bixby Library. Our volunteers were busy preparing for what would become their most successful Plant, Pie, and Book Sale to date.

Plant Sale Chair Maggie Catillaz and her resourceful committee members enlisted community members (thank you!) and area plant nurseries and businesses (double thanks!) to amass an impressive 184 types of plants and 19 homemade pies — a sweet treat that was clearly a crowd-pleaser.

The Plant Sale grew alongside the ongoing work of longtime Friends of the Library leader, Karlene Devine. We thank Karlene, and the team of dedicated Friends of the Library who collect, organize, display, sell, and put away a treasure trove of books during the beloved Bixby Library Book Sales.

Please join me in giving a special thank you to our Friends of the Bixby Library who raise funds to support our service to the community throughout the year. This month, we look forward to celebrating National Friends of Libraries Week, October 20-26th. If you see one of the Friends of the Bixby, be sure to shower them with love!

With Gratitude,

What's New at the Library?

Autumn in Addison County Community Room Exhibit

Autumn settles over Addison County, and the Bixby Library’s volunteer History Team has been hard at work exploring the archives to create the Community Room's newest exhibit: Autumn in Addison County. We've curated a stunning collection of historical artwork that captures our region in its autumnal splendor.

Sit for a spell in the Community Room and enjoy these beautiful depictions of our local landscape. The art is accompanied by informational labels, which offer a window into our region's past and the artists who captured it.

Biosphere in Your Backyard Exhibits

Did you know the Bixby Library is in a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve? Assigned in 1989, the Champlain-Adirondack Biosphere Network (CABN) is an internationally recognized network connecting people and organizations in an effort to build harmonious relationships between communities and the environment.

This fall, the Bixby is showcasing an exhibit in the Kerr Room that links our wonderful outdoor scenery with our extensive historical collections. The exhibit, titled Biosphere In Your Backyard, interprets our records through a biosphere lens, and considers how the landscape can influence history. The exhibit can be viewed in the Kerr Room, with accompanying book displays in both the Vermont Room and the Children’s Room.

This project has been funded in part by the United States National Park Service (NPS) under assistance agreement (P23AC02038-00) to NEIWPCC in partnership with the Lake Champlain Basin Program.

Free COVID Tests

With cooler weather and family gatherings on the horizon, the Bixby Library offers free COVID tests to help you be safe and protect your loved ones. Stop by our Community Resources table to pick up a test during open hours, and enjoy the season with peace of mind.

Librarians' Corner

This fall has been a busy publishing season, with new releases from top authors like Jodi Picoult, Richard Osman, Sally Rooney, and Liane Moriarty. I'd like to highlight a few recent under-the-radar titles that are sure to spark conversation:

(Fiction) Madwoman by Chelsea Bieker: Clove has constructed a perfect life, complete with a loving family, by hiding her traumatic past and managing her anxiety through self-help strategies. However, a letter from her mother in a women's prison forces her to confront her history, leading her on a perilous journey to unravel the defining day of her life and question whether revealing the truth will liberate or destroy her.

(Non-Fiction) Sky Full of Elephants by Cebo Campbell: After a cataclysmic event leads all white people in America to walk into bodies of water, Charlie Brunton, a Black man and former prison inmate turned professor, receives a call from his estranged daughter, Sidney, who has spent a year in isolation. Together, they embark on a journey through a transformed America, both grappling with their pasts and the new realities of their identities in this post-racial landscape.

(Memoir) A Little Less Broken: How an Autism Diagnosis Finally Made Me Whole by Marian Schembari: In her memoir, Marian Schembari recounts her decades-long struggle to understand her autism, which led to numerous misdiagnoses and a lifetime of hiding her true self. With humor and honesty, she explores the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals, particularly women, in obtaining a diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of recognition in overcoming shame and embracing one's identity.

Invite your favorite stuffed animal for a Tea Party Storytime at the Bixby!

On Saturday, October 12th, join us in the Children’s Room at 10:30AM. Fancy party clothes are optional. We'll start with a tea-themed Storytime to get our imaginations going before we sit down and pour imaginary tea with our stuffies. We're sure to have a tea party to remember.

At the end of the month, we begin an Intro to LEGO Robotics for 5th through 9th graders. Program participants will attend events on both Saturday, October 26th and Saturday, November 2nd. LEGO Robotics is not about building with LEGO, it is about learning to program. LEGO is just the tool to get you there. For more information, and to register for the events, send me an email.

As the days get shorter, we know some folks are looking for opportunities to connect after dark. That's why we're piloting After Hours at the Bix — where the Community Room transforms into an oasis for good company.

We’re kicking things off with a Beetlejuice (1988) Watch Party from 7-9 PM on October 24th. Snuggle up on our comfiest couches and coziest chairs, laugh and scream along to the classic movie, compare it to the new release, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), and eat copious amounts of free popcorn. Looking for an opportunity to soft-launch your Halloween costume? There's candy waiting for anyone who comes to Beetlejuice in costume!

After Hours at the Bix is all about creating a laid-back space for community members to connect and unwind after dark. I welcome your suggestions for future after-hours events at the Bixby, send them my way!

Staff Recommendations

The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley

The Midnight Feast is Lucy Foley's newest book, and the publisher says it best:

"Welcome to the opening weekend of The Manor, a luxury resort built on top of old secrets in an ancient wood. The founder, the lover, the mystery guest, the kitchen help, the detective-All have an agenda. All have a past. But not everyone will survive."

This book has both memorable characters and an ending full of twists.

Don’t Walk Alone at Night by Veronika Martenova Charles

Just in time for Halloween and everything creepy, our early readers will love Don’t Walk Alone at Night by Veronika Martenova Charles.

On a walk after dark, three friends frighten each other with stories based on folk tales from other cultures. After hearing the stories, they don’t want to admit they are scared, but they become a bit more cautious. All ten books in the Don't series were just added to our Easy Readers Collection, so there are plenty more to enjoy.

You Are Here by David Nicholls

Michael, reeling from his wife’s departure, retreats into long, solitary walks in the English countryside, while Marnie isolates herself in her London flat, avoiding reminders of her past. Their lives unexpectedly intertwine on a challenging ten-day Coast-to-Coast hike, where they both discover the potential for healing and a brighter future. Equal parts hilarious and charming, I found this novel to be an absolute delight!

You Are Here is available as an e-book or audiobook through the Libby app.
