LET'S GET SCREENING BACK ON TRACK

As COVID-19 gripped the country, colorectal cancer screenings plummeted. This March, we are calling on our Nevada partners to help make colorectal health a priority again. The Early Detection Task Force has created several CRC videos you can share with your patients to alleviate anxiety and get folks back to your screening facilities. Thank you Community Health Alliance for helping to develop a Spanish video explaining FIT kits!

Launched! Cancer Survivor Community Website

Whether a newly diagnosed patient is looking for resources, a caregiver seeking support, a survivor sharing personal experiences, or a cancer specialist sharing expertise, the ThriveNV program, envisioned by the Survivorship Task Force, can assist patients and caregivers through this challenging time in life.

We welcome feedback from our trusted partners on this new endeavor. After spending some time on the ThriveNV.org website, please download our review form and send comments to steve@NevadaCancerCoalition.org.

2021 Cancer Control Summit is Open for Sponsorships

The 2021 Nevada Cancer Control Summit, hosted by Nevada Cancer Coalition, is a statewide conference featuring sessions on targeted topics across the cancer spectrum. The Summit brings together physicians, nurses, advocates, survivors, administrators, and more. They'll share cutting-edge information, update practitioners on the latest topics in cancer care, and provide networking opportunities to further cancer control efforts in Nevada. This year’s Summit will be held on September 28, 2021, at the Carpenter’s International Training Center in Las Vegas!

NCC is happy to announce sponsorship and exhibit opportunities are available. Along with Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze levels, organizations can also choose to support specific activities including the registry sessions, breakfast and breaks, and the awards luncheon. There is limited exhibit space and exhibitor registration will close once capacity is reached - NCC had to do this the last three years, so don’t wait until the last minute! Complete Summit details will be available on the 2021 Summit webpage as they are finalized.

DHHS Launches COVID-19 Vaccination Call Center

The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services has launched a vaccination call center to answer questions, assist anyone who needs help making an appointment and provide county-specific updates and information. The call center is open seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm at (800) 401-0946. Additional information:

Normal Immune Response to the COVID-19 Vaccine Can Mimic a Sign of Breast Cancer

Doctors recommend patients schedule their mammogram before receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, or space out the two appointments, after some women have been mistaking swollen lymph nodes for breast lumps.

If a patient is scheduled for a mammogram soon after getting a COVID-19 vaccine, it’s important to know when and which arm received the injection. Based on the situation, have a discussion on whether a change in the mammogram appointment is necessary. Do not delay mammograms if at all possible.

NEVADA COVID-19 INFORMATION

Resuming Cancer Screening & Treatment During the Pandemic

Cancer won’t wait and neither should you. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) conservatively predicted almost 10,000 excess deaths in the U.S. from breast and colorectal cancer alone over the next 10 years because of pandemic-related delays in cancer screening and treatment. Oncology experts agree that people should not delay any necessary prevention or care.

Getting back on track

Prioritize cancer screening, as long as it is safe to do so.
Provide the public with safe options for cancer prevention and early detection.
Focus efforts on promoting screening and overcoming barriers for vulnerable populations.
Communicate COVID-19 risks to the public in a transparent and trustworthy manner.
Ensure people in our communities are not delaying care for important medical issues.
Encourage people in our communities to resume recommended cancer screenings.
Facilitate and encourage people with cancer to resume evidence-based treatment.
