As we head into the holiday season, and witness an uptick in Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection (RSV) as well as flu cases, please be sure to circulate information to your communities and networks about how they can best make use of resources available to them.
-
The NYC Vaccine Finder is a great tool for finding locations that provide vaccinations for COVID-19, MPV, and the flu! Visit https://vaccinefinder.nyc.gov/ to schedule your vaccine!
-
SI COAD continues to distribute PPE (masks, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes) and rapid test kits. While you prepare to gather with loved ones for fall and winter holidays, be sure to take extra precautions to avoid potential spread of COVID. Be sure to test regularly. Email frank@sinfpa.org to inquire about free PPE and test kits.

|
Report at Home Covid Testing
COVID-19 testing remains an essential tool as the United States heads into the holiday season and people navigate respiratory viruses. While taking a rapid COVID-19 test has become commonplace, test results are not often reported. COVID-19 test results provide valuable data that public health departments can use to assess the needs and modify the responses in the local community, the state or the nation.
Please circulate and utilize an important resource established by the National Institute of Health to help track COVID-19 cases HERE.

MPV Vaccination
SI COAD Partner Super Health Pharmacy now has the MPV vaccine. If you’re concerned that you’re at risk of catching MPV (aka Monkeypox) consider stopping by and getting an MPV vaccine!
Staten Islanders have a dedicated MPV helpline operated by Project Hospitality. Anyone can call 718-608-7900 to learn more about symptoms, prevention, and first and second dose vaccine appointments.
Eligibility has been expanded! Now anyone of any sexual orientation or gender identity who is at risk for MPV can get vaccinated.
There are first and second dose appointments available. All City-run sites also accept walk-ins. You should get a second dose at least 28 days after your first dose.

Plan Announced to Address Needs for New Yorkers with Untreated Mental Illness: Mayor Adams announced a new pathway forward to address the ongoing crisis of individuals experiencing severe mental illnesses left untreated and unsheltered in New York City’s streets and subways. The Mayor detailed a compassionate new vision to tackle this crisis, beginning with a directive being issued immediately to city agencies and contractors involved in evaluating and providing care to individuals in psychiatric crisis so that more people in need of help receive it.
City Buildings Lit Red for World AIDS Day: Both City Hall and the David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building were lit red in recognition of World AIDS Day. “New York City stands united in the fight against HIV and AIDS, and today we show our support for those living with HIV/AIDS and honor those we’ve lost to this epidemic,” said Mayor Adams.
Lifestyle Medicine Foundational Training Offered to Every NYC Health Care Practitioner: Mayor Adams and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) announced a new partnership — as a result of a massive $44 million investment by ACLM — to provide every New York City health care practitioner with free introductory training in nutrition and lifestyle medicine, enabling practitioners to integrate evidence-based content into their clinical practice to treat certain health conditions. Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses evidence-based, therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and Type 2 diabetes. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine — a healthful plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connections — also provides effective prevention for many common chronic conditions.

$60 million Workforce Investment for Human Services Workers
In June, thousands of workers showed up at City Hall to demand #JustPay, and the result was a $60 million pot of money for human services workers in the City budget.
This was an important step in equitable pay – but it was just one step and we know we have further to go before we’ve reached our goals. Since June, we have waited for the City to roll out this promised $60 million “workforce investment” in their FY23 budget to providers. Last week, the government finally sent out information about the new
funds – but created further delays by telling human services providers they’ll need to proactively request and distribute those funds to workers, rather than just sending them to workers directly.
Click here for more information on the City's $60 million Workforce Investment that you can share with your team.
As this funding rolls out, please continue to share your questions and concerns so that we can get you answers and ensure uniform implementation. On behalf of HSC, we are so grateful for what we have accomplished together. Stick with us in the coming months to help the sector make our voices heard and strengthen our advocacy in the movement to #JustPay!

New York City’s Wounded Healers: A Cross-Program, Participatory Action Research Study of Credible Messengers
Credible messengers are people who share unique lived experiences, especially of criminalization with the people and communities they serve. They are people who have transformed their lives to help vulnerable people do the same. The New York City Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity and Young Men’s Initiative funded the Urban Institute to examine the current gaps in the literature on credible messengers, situate credible messengers in their historical and systemic contexts, and examine the everyday use of credible messengers by organizations and agencies in New York City.
|
|
Credible messengers (CMs) are people with lived experience, typically in the criminal legal system, who have transformed their lives to become agents of change in their communities. With funding and support from the New York City Mayor's Office for Economic Opportunity, the Urban Institute used Participitory Action Research methods to document the evidence base on the use of CMs in human services, the historical and systemic contexts surrounding their work, and the current landscape of CMs in New York City. This factsheet outlines one component of the Urban Institute’s work, the cross-program qualitative landscape scan, which summarizes the perceived successes, impacts, challenges, and needs of CMs and the organizations/agencies that employ them. It concludes with eight recommendations for improvement and capacity building in CM work.
