Our Alert System Worked!

Our first 2026 alert issued through the BL Alert WhatsApp chat went into action this week and it worked very well.

A bear sighting was reported, a warning was immediately issued, and the day camp initiated a temporary lockdown. The bear’s movements were tracked, residents were kept informed of its location, and staff and volunteers were deployed to alert anyone who may not have seen the messages.

The bear was safely steered away from residents and eventually disappeared into the woods. Once the area was secure, an “all clear” was issued.

It was a well-coordinated response, made possible by the vigilance and cooperation of our residents, staff, and volunteers. Well done! And hopefully, we will not need to repeat it anytime soon!

Black Bear Spotted in the Beaver Lake Woods

Black bears are native to the Catskills and are a normal part of our local wildlife. Most bears prefer to avoid people and will move away once they know someone is nearby.

If you encounter a bear:

* Stay calm and do not run.

* Give the bear plenty of space and allow it an escape route.

* Slowly back away while facing the bear.

* Speak in a normal, firm voice so it recognizes you as a person.

* Keep children close.

* Never feed bears or leave food, garbage, or bird seed where bears can access it.

Bear sightings do not necessarily indicate a dangerous situation. Most black bears pass through an area and continue on their way. By avoiding food attractants and respecting their space, we can safely coexist with these remarkable animals.

Since Beaver Lake borders extensive woodland, it’s not unusual for bears to travel through the area, especially during summer when they’re foraging.
