The Deputy Mayor's Exchange

When our family moved here in 1969, Unionville was a sleepy picturesque village consisting of "Varley Village" and the historic Main Street. Warden north of Highway 7 was gravel and was referred to as the 5th Concession. There was no Kennedy Road as we know it today. Highway 7 was two lanes, one in each direction. When you passed over Steeles Avenue coming north, you could feel a change in the air. Most of the area was still farmland. That was 50 years ago!

This year marks our 50th and Markham's 225th anniversary and to celebrate the City is hosting a party as part of Markham Museum's Applefest. Bring the kids for a day of fun, food, and free entertainment.

I hope you can join my wife and me at the Union Villa Gala where we help raise funds to improve the lives of our seniors who call this wonderful campus home.

This week begins the Budget process. As always, my goal is to have any tax rate increase at or below the rate of inflation. Lots of work ahead to achieve this goal.

Last week I really had my eyes opened with how workspaces have changed when I attended the opening of LMN's beautiful new head office here in Downtown Markham. What a modern design. We continue to bring desirable businesses to our City.

Happy 225th Markham!

Just a reminder as the weather changes and our food choices change, that Fats, Oils and Grease (F.O.G.) shouldn't be disposed of down the drain. They should all be put into your Green Bin.

Fatbergs are real… in pipes, in wastewater treatment systems and now in the dictionary . Fats, grease, personal care products and wipes can clog drains, upset treatment processes and lead to fatbergs.

More information is available here .

A reminder from Markham Fire

Portable fireplaces and firepots add ambiance to your space but there are risks to using them, especially with pourable fuels.

If you have an outdoor ethanol appliance, always make sure flames are completely out and it is cold to the touch before refueling. Only refuel when no one is near the appliance.
