Tepezza, approved by the FDA in 2020 to treat thyroid eye disease (TED), has recently been associated with serious hearing impairment injuries, including hearing loss, deafness, tinnitus, hypoacusis and autophony. Patients treated with Tepezza IV infusions may be at risk for debilitating and potentially permanent related hearing loss or hearing impairment.

Horizon Therapeutics USA, Inc. sought FDA approval for Tepezza (also known as teprotumumab) after two small clinical trials (totaling only 84 patients). Horizon reported that less than 10% of patients in the clinical trials experienced hearing impairment symptoms, characterized as temporary and mild to moderate in severity.

However, information has recently come to light that indicates the risk of suffering a hearing impairment after using Tepezza may be much more common, severe, and permanent than what Horizon previously reported to the FDA and the public as part of the FDA approval process. A new study published in early 2022 found that over 81% of the patients in the study taking Tepezza developed new hearing impairment symptoms. Several of these patients continued to suffer such hearing impairments, even after discontinuation of Tepezza.
