JJ Ferguson Plant Tour

On November 21, 2019, Dr. Chris Mullen from Ole Miss and seven of his prestressed concrete design class students made a trip to J.J. Ferguson in Greenwood, MS to tour their precast plant. The class spent the majority of the day with Mike Jones learning the basic processes of the prestress-precast industry from the planning phase through the quality control phase and into the final inspection of the product before shipment to the customer.

ALDOT/Dunlap Road NEXT Beam Bridge

United States Transportation Secretary Elane Chao has approved the award of an Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) Demonstration to the Alabama Department of Transportation (recipient) and the Baldwin County Highway Department (sub-recipient) in the amount of $1,000,000 for the design, construction, and inspection of a NEXT beam / ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) bridge retrofit project in Baldwin County.

Auburn University Day of Concrete

On February 20th, I had the opportunity to attend Concrete Day 2020 as part of the American Concrete Institute Student Chapter at Auburn University. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Randall Poston, who is the current President of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Senior Principle with Pivot Engineers in Austin, TX. Dr. Poston’s topic revolved around the evaluation and repair of concrete structures and featured a few projects he and his company have worked on recently.

Tulane Final Review 2020

As the ongoing PCI Foundation Studio at Tulane University is heading into its second year, the university held its final review on December 12th at the Richardson Memorial Hall Library. Witnessing the imagination of the students as they design with precast elements is encouraging and enjoyable.

Did you know? Sugar is a well known “retardant” of precast concrete (and concrete in general) and is often used to adjust the setting times, especially in emergencies or in warm weather.

Performance Art Center at Murphysboro High School

In 2016, the roof of the Performing Arts Center at Murphysboro High School in southern Illinois collapsed under the weight of heavy equipment, causing the exterior walls to buckle. There were no injuries, but the incident put pressure on the school to replace the facility with a more durable structure. The ensuing project included building a new, larger facility that would accommodate 700 seats (up from 400), as well as renovating the administration area.

AL Transportation Conference

The 63rd Annual Alabama Transportation Conference was held February 11th-12th in Montgomery, AL. The overwhelming attendance appeared to be close to 1,000. Giving the keynote address was Shailen Bhatt, President of Intelligent Transportation Society of America.
