July “Refer a Friend Promotion” is Live!

Do you love your farmbox? Share the love with a friend!

We are on the cusp of summer’s most anticipated flavors: juicy tomatoes ready to be sliced for a BLT, summer squash and eggplant for those backyard barbecues, raspberries for sweet jars of jam. Summer in Maine is fleeting, and as a Daybreak customer, we hope you feel better prepared to not miss out on any of these awesome items!

For the entire month of July, we are once again offering our “refer a friend promotion” - we invite you to share the love with your friends! Active customers will receive 25% off their next box when a new customer that they refer starts a Daybreak subscription. Their friend will also receive 25% off their first farm box - win win!

WHAT TO DO: Promotion starts July 1 and runs through July 31: Simply share the promo code FRIEND24 with a friend, and make sure they enter your full name when they sign up (THAT’S KEY!). We will apply the 25% discount code to both of your next farm boxes.

I M P O R T A N T !

Summer schedules are fun, but can be busy and chaotic! Here are a few farmbox reminders to make sure you’re getting the best summer goods (hello, tomatoes and raspberries!), and don’t miss out.

Box Holds

Going away for a trip and can’t pick up your box? Boxes have to be put on Hold by Thursday at 12pm the week PRIOR to scheduled delivery date. If a box is put on hold you will not receive that box or be charged for it.

Box Reschedules

Need to pick up your farmbox a different day from a different location? Use the Reschedule option by Thursday at 12pm the week prior to the original delivery date to move a box to a different delivery date or pick up location, charges will then process the Thursday prior to the rescheduled delivery date.

Box Donations

Can’t pick up your box but want to donate it? You can choose to Donate your box by Thursday at 12pm the week prior to the scheduled delivery date. Daybreak will deliver donated boxes to food insecurity programs in the community.

Substitutions

Unlike a traditional CSA, the ability to customize Daybreak boxes allows for a variety of produce. However, we still have to work within the availability of what our farm partners have available for harvest the week of delivery and sometimes substitutions have to be made. When this happens Daybreak will select an equivalent substitute for boxes, substitutes do not adhere to member preferences.

Forgotten Boxes

Any orders remaining after pick up time ends are forfeited and removed from the site and donated. Please note: if you cannot make a pick up and did not put your box on hold it is your responsibility to make arrangements for a family member or friend to pick up your order. No refunds will be given for any scheduled boxes that are not picked up.

New Products!

With many new produce items coming into season weekly, we also wanted to highlight some exciting new value-added items that are making their way into farmboxes. Make sure you try these items and let us know what you think! Are you a fan of other local products and think Daybreak customers would be, too? Check out our Product Idea Form linked below!

The Good Crust’s Pizza Crust Mix: just add water, and start making your own dough with fresh, stone-milled grains from Maine. Ideal for pizza crust, stromboli, bialys, breadsticks, focaccia, or flatbread. Pizzas are a great canvas to showcase other Daybreak box items, especially produce in Farmers’ Choice boxes that you might not be familiar with!

Slow Rise Farm in Pittson grows organic wild Maine blueberries and turns them into delicious, dehydrated fruit leathers. We are currently carrying their Wild Maine Blueberry, and their Apple Aronia Berry leathers. These are perfect snacks for any activity - pack into a lunchbox, keep in your purse, fuel you up a mountain!

Whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian, or meat-eater, tempeh is a delicious plant-based protein packed with flavor, texture, and healthy fats. We heard from several Daybreak customers that they’re fans of Tooties Tempeh, and are thrilled to now offer two options: Traditional, and Curry!

Recipe: Garlic Scape Pesto

While the season (now!) for garlic scapes is short, these snakey flavor bombs last a long time in your fridge, or even longer when turned into jars of versatile garlic scape pesto. This time of year, farmers carefully cut the flowering heads off garlic (that’s the scape) so all the energy goes into the bulb of the plant. Later in the summer, robust flavored and large garlic bulbs will be harvested, cured, and enjoyed for months ahead.

A little goes a long way with garlic scape pesto, so consider thinning with Yost Farm’s sunflower oil to use more like a traditional basil pesto.

Recipe and photo from VanillaAndBean.com

Ingredients

  • 10 garlic scapes
  • 1/3 cup pine nuts (or your favorite nut)
  • 1/3 cup parmesan cheese (Try one of the hard cheeses we often have in stock, like Parmesan from Balfour Farm, Collinsbrook from Winter Hill Farm, or Granite Rose from Abraham’s Creamery)
  • 1/2 juice lemon
  • 1/8 tsp Maine sea salt
  • A few grinds of black pepper
  • 1/3 cup sunflower oil

Instructions

  1. Trim the garlic scapes by cutting just below the bulb and also if the end of the stem seems woody, trim that too (like asparagus). Discard the bulb and end of stem, then set the remaining scape aside (the curly part).
  2. In a food processor, add the scapes, twirling them around the center so that they all fit. Add the pine nuts or nut of choice, cheese, juice of the lemon and salt and pepper. Process by pulsing until the mixture begins to break down. Scrape the bowl down.
  3. With the processor running, slowly add all the sunflower oil. Continue to process until all the ingredients are incorporated and broken down, about one minute.
  4. Store in a covered container or lidded jar in the fridge and enjoy within a week. Also, you can freeze the pesto in a jar or in an ice-cube tray. Once frozen, in the ice-cube tray, remove and place in a zip top bag in the freezer.
