Dear Ohio-ACC Colleague,

As our thoughts turn to spring, and at least a partial return to normalcy after two difficult years, the Ohio Chapter-ACC is putting all of its efforts into making this a rewarding year for all of our members. This includes creating a new educational podcast, planning the upcoming Spring Summit, preparing a unique program to help close the gender gap in cardiology, and looking forward to networking with colleagues in person at ACC.22.

CardiOhio Podcast
I am delighted to share the brand new Ohio-ACC CardiOhio Podcast with you! This podcast series will provide concise, illuminating interviews with cardiovascular experts from Ohio, addressing practical clinical tips for all cardiovascular clinicians.

Episode 1: Putting the Chest Pain Guidelines into Practice: Practical Tips from Imaging Experts.

We are anxious to hear your opinion. Please let us know your feedback and suggestions.
State of the State
Each year, ACC Chapters compile a State of the State report. I am happy to share the highlights from 2021 with you below. You can read Ohio-ACC's full State of the State report for the American College of Cardiology here.

  • FIT Leadership Series: With the goal of increasing fellow-in-training engagement and retention, Ohio-ACC launched an innovative educational experience for first-year fellows, the FIT Leadership Series. The series covered important topics for FITs that are not traditionally covered within fellowship training, such as considerations for the job search post-training (academics vs private practice, job contracts), financial planning, the path to FACC, specific requirements required by the ACC during fellowship training, and prerequisites for board exams. We had excellent participation, with participants from across Ohio and other states, and outstanding feedback from participants. The series featured early-career faculty from across the state with input from Program Directors. The content was captured and turned into enduring education for our website and will be continued annually. This will ensure increased engagement with the Ohio-ACC among fellows, early-career faculty, and program directors while advancing actionable knowledge for our fellows.
  • Transition to Virtual Meetings: Given the pandemic-related challenges to hold live meetings, Ohio-ACC successfully transitioned to virtual meetings, which were able to retain member engagement successfully including participation from fellows in training, CV Team members, and support from industry. The Spring Summit in April 2021 and the Annual Meeting in October 2021 were both conducted on an innovative virtual platform that allowed engagement with faculty from participants, networking and social features (408 discussion messages), breakout sessions for fellows and CVT members, and virtual exhibits from vendors who provided financial support for the meeting. Both meetings had high participation (Spring Summit = 206, Annual Meeting = 215), and had outstanding feedback ratings from participants.

The competition promotes a healthy rivalry between ACC Chapters, fosters FIT engagement, and provides educational value to both the contestants and the audience.

FIT Leadership Series
The Ohio-ACC Fellow in Training Council continues its FIT Leadership Series. The goal of the series is to educate FITs on how to maximize fellowship time to work towards accomplishing career goals, and to highlight the important considerations of finding a job. So far this year, we have hosted lectures on Negotiating Job Contracts, Placement of VADs in Failing Fontan Circulation & the Use of Virtual Surgical Planning, and The Top 10 Things Young Doctors Should Know About Personal Finance. Our final lecture in the series is on May 3: Diagnosing & Treating Sexism in Cardiology.
Women in Cardiology
Recruiting Tomorrow's Cardiologists
The Ohio-ACC Women in Cardiology section will host Recruiting Tomorrow's Cardiologists, a special recruitment event for female internal medicine residents and female medical students on Saturday, April 9, at South Winter Garden at Health Education Campus- Cleveland Clinic/CWRU, 9501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH.

Please share this flyer with your female residents and female medical students to encourage their participation!

Goal: There is a significant discrepancy in gender representation within cardiology, as only 20% of cardiology fellows are females (with much worse rates in procedural subspecialties, only 5% of interventional cardiologists are women). The purpose of this event is to recruit more women into cardiology by inviting female residents and medical students to come and spend a half-day hearing from female cardiologists from different subspecialties (general, interventional, EP, heart failure, prevention, etc.) regarding their career journey, network, and get exposure to the many technologies/devices/therapeutics as demonstrated by different vendors who will be able to set up booths to demo their products.

Be A Part of It
Take a look look at the Ohio-ACC Women in Cardiology Shine the Spotlight Campaign! This initiative showcases Ohio-ACC female cardiologists to offer networking, mentoring, and research and clinical opportunities. We hope that this campaign will also highlight a cardiology career to our talent pipeline.

To be a part of it, please submit your professional photo (i.e. official faculty or fellow portrait or similar quality) and statement response(s). Brief, bold statements will be most effective. SUBMIT YOUR INFORMATION.

ACC Message of Support For the Ukrainian People
As the fighting in Ukraine intensifies, the ACC is joining its voice with other global cardiovascular societies and humanitarian organizations urging support for all those caught in the escalating crisis.
In the decades since its founding in 1949, the ACC has evolved into a global leader in transforming cardiovascular care and improving heart health. With more than 54,000 members worldwide, of which more than 25% reside outside the U.S., the College has a long history of working with its partner societies and 42 International Chapters to tangibly reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease and accelerate advances in heart care regardless of politics and borders.
“ACC’s leaders and staff express our deepest concerns and support for our members and all those on the ground in Ukraine, as well as those in neighboring countries and throughout the world who are helping to provide support and medical care for the ever-growing number of refugees,” says ACC President Dipti Itchhaporia, MD, FACC. “We thank those who are literally on the front lines and continuing to provide care to patients from bomb shelters and basements. Our collective hope is for a resolution that mitigates any further loss of life.”
The ACC has made a donation to the UN Refugee Agency (USA for UNHCR) to provide much-needed emergency aid to families in Ukraine. Their work to provide “Help, Hope and Home” to refugees worldwide is consistent with what each of our members do each day – help and heal. ACC members seeking to make additional donations can access the UNHCR site, here. The International Committee of the Red Cross is also accepting donations for their on-the-ground efforts in the area.
