Province breaks ground on Ontario Line elevated guideway and new stations

The governments of Canada and Ontario officially broke ground on the elevated guideway and four new stations for the Ontario Line subway.

Crews have begun work along the three-kilometre elevated guideway, a raised stretch of track that will connect Don Valley, Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park stations, where ground has also now been broken. This section will bring 30,500 people within walking distance of a subway stop and improve access to 14,800 jobs in the area.

CIBC warns overstated housing starts mask economic weakness in Canada

CIBC is warning that cracks forming in the housing market will weigh on the economy as construction flags and homeowners keep a tighter grip on their wallets.

The bank said in a new report the housing market is too soft to encourage builders to break ground on new homes at the pace needed to lift the economy and deliver a long overdue supply injection.

“I think that we are in the early stages of this correction when it comes to the impact on the economy,” said CIBC deputy chief economist Benjamin Tal in an interview.

Residential Growth Drives Canada’s Construction Investment to $23.7B in December

Statistics Canada reports that total investment in building construction increased by $442.9 million (+1.9%) to $23.7 billion in December, marking a 12.2% year-over-year gain. Residential Construction Leads Monthly Growth

The residential sector was the primary driver of December’s increase, rising 2.4% to $16.8 billion. Growth was fueled by both multi-unit and single-family construction.

Accelerating the digital transformation of Canadian infrastructure delivery

Future of Infrastructure Group (FIG) and Arup announced the launch of a new white paper titled Unlocking Digital Twins in Canada. It outlines a path and recommendations for accelerating the digital transformation of Canadian infrastructure delivery.

Canada is seeing a historic level of investment in infrastructure yet delays and cost overruns for complex projects are a hurdle to getting these major projects built. The way infrastructure — like transit lines, bridges, and roadways — are planned, delivered, and maintained can be revolutionized with the power of digital twins.

Canada not on track to hit net-zero by 2050, or meet any climate targets: study

A new study by the Canadian Climate Institute says Canada is not on track to meet any of its climate targets — not the 2026 interim emissions reduction target, the 2030 Paris Agreement commitment, or even the long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

The report suggests Canada has moved away from its climate goals thanks to “a slackening of policy effort over the past year, marked by the removal or weakening of climate policies across the country.”
