Every April, ELAWC amplifies efforts to end sexual violence during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. We took our SAAM programming to the next level this year with our signature empowerment: Red Lips, Hoops On Invincible!
Red lipstick and hoop earrings are used as powerful symbols to dispel cultural myths that normalize sexual violence and rape culture and remind us that: Who I am and what I wear does not justify sexual violence!
Throughout the month we hosted a variety of workshops, joined in Denim Day, and took part in Take Back the Night at East Los Angeles College and a Loteria night where participants learned about the prevention and treatment of HIV and the intersection between sexual assault and domestic violence.
We wrapped up the campaign with a fantastic INVINCIBLE multi-media experience and runway show. Over 250 community members gathered to celebrate and recognize the beauty that we see every day as we work to prevent, advocate, or heal sexual violence.
Our models included survivors, volunteers, sexual assault prevention professionals, community partners, and our own gorgeous staff, who were “glammed up” by stylists, makeup, and hair professionals.
It was a fun, magical, powerful, and unique event that highlighted brave, fearless, faithful, focused, determined, unwavering, accomplished, and invincible survivors, volunteers, staff, community partners, and leaders in our fight to end sexual violence.
Wow! Thank you to EVERYONE who participated.
